An interview with... Happyness
Happyness are quickly becoming a big name in the UK scene. The band have seen themselves touring alongside Jaws and Slow Club and they have just released their new single 'A Whole New Shape'. During their hectic days, we caught up with them for a little chat.
A lot of people labelled Weird Little Birthday as transatlantic and 90s indie, was there ever a style or sound that wanted to achieve, or do you prefer to let it speak for itself?
The second... Let it speak for itself.
Before the album you hadn’t done much in the live sphere, and now you’ve just been touring with Jaws, and at SXSW, then doing some shows with Drenge in Europe. It’s a pretty huge shift– what’s it been like and has it changed any of the band’s dynamics?
It’s been good getting to know the service stations of the UK. We went to the self crowned ‘UK’s Best Organic Services’ up in the Lake District. They had a whole farmer’s market with a butcher and another two men in a bathtub. It was definitely a big change for us, but the first release of the album was a while ago so we’ve got pretty used to it.
It seems you jumped location a lot recording the album: an abandoned church to a carpentry warehouse; all of this self-recorded – for any future material would you ever consider swapping this for the ‘studio experience’, or do you think it helped shape the album?
Yeah we jumped 49.1 miles. Which doesn’t seem like much actually. We were moving all our stuff around in the snow at the church so it felt a lot worse than it was. As far as recording’s concerned, I’m sure we’ll go into a studio sometime. At the moment we’re very happy with self – producing stuff but that’s not to say that won’t change. We spend a lot of time trying out stupid (and sometimes really terrible) ideas so it’s nice to have a place that’s our own to do that in.
You recently got the ‘Best Lyric Award’ from NME for the brilliant “I’m wearing Win Butler’s hair/There’s a scalpless singer in a Montreal rock band somewhere”, and your other writing is similarly agile. Do you build your instrumentation around lyrics or vice versa?
Thanks! Usually instruments first, but sometimes we’ll already have some words in place at the beginning. Nothing is fixed – like foreplay or the film “Lucy” when Scarlett Johansson
Given that award was down to a voting process that suggests you’ve got some strong support out there. Have you ever had much contact with fans, in person or otherwise?
In the venues we play, we almost always walk directly off stage right into the crowd, so it’s hard not to come into contact with fans, personally and otherwise. It’s definitely a good thing – they tend to be nice to us, but we have our close protection guys on hand to keep shit from kicking off!
So to round things off, what’re your plans for the rest of the year?
We’re gonna be in these places in this order: America, UK, Europe, America, UK. And then hopefully we’ll make a second record.
Thanks for your time!
Peace and love!

The Weekly Catch-Up (w/e 9th August)
Happy Saturday to one and all, it's that time of week again where we delve into the past 7 days to re-live the best new music from all over the world. New videos, covers, new tracks and even some new music from IAI faves MOATS!
Bel Esprit - Lose My Mind
Southampton based Bel Esprit have today given us the privilege to unveil their brand new single "Lose My Mind" with the B-Side too called "The Mad Ones". The band are one of the south-coasts top up and coming bands and with this latest single that's pretty much a dead cert now!
Moats - Jeff Buckley
The track makes use of the bands strong-points, Matt's lovely gruff vocals, Nathan's relentless drumming, James and Will's tight guitar skills. This track is a long way off from their early stuff, but all bands evolve, I'm liking their new sound!
Ben Howard - End of the Affair
Ben Howard has unveiled a dramatic first track as a taster to his forthcoming second album this evening (5th August). "End Of The Affair" is now streaming just below if you hadn't noticed! Also details of the second album will be announced imminently.
Rae Morris - Cold (PANES Remix)
Rae Morris has unveiled PANES' huge remix of her track Cold ft Fryars, out now. Rae will be playing festivals throughout the summer, including headlining the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading & Leeds Festival in 3 weeks time.
Happyness - You Come To Kill Me?!
New music is revealed by Happyness today, in the shape of "You Come To Kill Me?!", a brand new track taken from the forthcoming "Anything I Do Is All Right" EP. The EP, released digitally on September 1st will cap a string of sold out live dates that has seen them support Jamie T!
Passport to Stockholm - Imperfections
One of the surprises last year at Gloucester's Underground Festival was Passport To Stockholm, and it's pretty much safe to say we've been following them since. And today the band has uploaded a brand new track called "Imperfections", which is odd because I can't find anything wrong with it!
Pixel Fix - Still
The Oxford band's latest EP "Running Thin" is out now (4th August), and you can stream the final song off the EP here, which is the rather delightful ambient track "Still". Mainly an instrumental apart from some airy whispers and yelps the guitars too help you properly relax.
Swoons - Nothing to Explain
The Buckinghamshire based band have released a brand new demo called "Nothing To Explain". The Bluesy band have had a good year with some great support slots and are basically celebrating by giving away this new demo.

Album Review... Happyness - Weird Little Birthday
Being patient is quite a quality to have. Upon hearing Happyness’ self-titled debut EP, it’s inevitable that myself and others have been sat on the edge of our seats. The agonising wait has finally come to an end, and my oh my, the South London three piece have done a marvellous job.
The opening track, ‘Baby Jesus (Jelly Boy)’, kickstarts the tremendous journey through a forest filled with lo-fi vocals and melodic, lullaby-esque guitar tones. The track dodges past old trees effortlessly, adding baggy bass-lines and soft drums to create a unity of lo-fi goodness past the thick of the forest. It’s unbelievably difficult to not add imagery to this track, and the album as a whole. You simply can’t ignore the fantastic lyrics either, they swerve in and out of odd confessions, drawing the listener into the wonderful world within this track. It’s fairly simple to say that ’Baby Jesus (Jelly Boy)’ is a majestic start to the 11-track blinder of an album.
Happyness certainly thrive in their beautiful, melancholy tracks, but we can’t forget about the more upbeat, and equally outstanding tracks. ‘Naked Patients’ is a personal favourite, and how could it not be? The band turn into some sort of cohesive substance when it comes to this track; everything is just right. The infectious ‘oohs’ and the chilled tones combine to create 4 minutes and 41 seconds of pure adventure, mischief and glimmering goodness. There’s a sense of wholeness within the lo-fi vocals that joke childishly about the human body. There’s also a gist of youth that springs out from the guitar solos and the mellow drum sound, and somehow everything seems alright. ‘Naked Patients’ is some sort of magical lullaby, and it surely transforms Happyness into three, magnificent, musician magicians.
Another fantastic track is ‘Lofts’. The intro is wonderfully misleading, drawing the listener into thinking the track will just dwell in a melancholy, ambient state. Of course, the woeful tones hang about with the lo-fi vocals and the enervating lyrics that simply target the hardships of love. But as the intro falls away, an unexpected light at the end of the tunnel appears, and the bluesy bass-line dances effortlessly into the haze of grey clouds and despondent vocals to create a shimmer of light. The main charm of ‘Lofts’ lies in the contrast between the bitter lyrics and the charming, divine instrumentals. The contrast is so grand that it soon becomes an equilibrium, and unfailingly catapults the listener into a quest filled with angst, delicacy and impeccable sounds.
Not only do Happyness have a tendency to prove themselves consistent and outright worthy, but they also have the ability to give the album a proper close. The final track, ‘Weird Little Birthday Girl’, is 9 minutes of bliss, or near enough. As proved on their debut EP, Happyness swirl in and out of soothing instrumentals that become so ingrained in your mind you’ll be convinced that everything is ok. Not a second is wasted when it comes to this track. The 2 and a half minute intro emphasises the talent of the South London three-piece. Memorable lyrics soon become entwined with the legitimate cool of the melody, and evolves into a 9 minute quest of clean guitar solos, soft drums and mopey baselines that gel together to boost any appreciation for the band.
It’s stunning to see a new band create such a masterpiece in a short period of time. I’m not sure I will experience the same content feeling that I got with the first listen of ‘Weird Little Birthday’, but I guarantee I will not forget it. Happyness have nailed the modern, lo-fi, slacker sound that I would deem to be as good as their influences (Yo La Tengo/Wilco/Sparklehorse). Happyness have blown their profile off the charts with this 11-track offering, and I can only hope they get every bit of appreciation as they deserve.

Track of the week... Happyness - It's On You
Happyness are a trio of friends that are set to take 2014 by storm, they are Jonny Allan, Benji Compston and Ashley Cooper. Having known each other for years, playing music and generally growing up together, they've decided to form a band to express themselves. After meandering around playing shows - without a name in some cases - they're ready to come out of the shadows, and with a great track in tow!
"It's On You" has a breezy feel to it, with influences of 90's brit-pop and garage that mould's itself into something that you can listen to while lazing around the house. A real song for the modern man, with lovely twists to the song mid-way through. It's really hard not to hate this song, even if you're not too sure about it on the first listen, you'd be wanting more from the end of the track, I've had myself replaying it already!
With their début EP being released on 6th January 2014, be sure to check in with them soon as I can see them being a buzz band of the new year! So stick this on and get lazy like a teenager shall on study break.
