Around the end of 2011 Vows were our 'Track of the week', and earlier on this year they released a live demo of a brand new song from their up-coming EP. The track was called 'Bloodsport' and today it's even more fun to listen to than ever. It's officially summer in the UK and this track has great vibes for you to get in the mood!

Interview... with VOWS

After releasing their latest video via our lovely little site, VOWS front-man Jack has been chatting us today about the band, their favourite moment in the band and who they hope they could support some day.

So, right out of the starting blocks, VOWS, how did it all start?
Right. Well, I suppose it's always been floating about between Lee, Riley, Jim and myself. Before VOWS we were in a band called Polo Lounge and we gigged for about a year pretty much anywhere we could. It was quite strange, because most of that stuff was Folk based, a lot of acoustic set ups. It's strange to look back now and think our roots began with an acoustic guitar. Sorry, I'm rambling aha. We were completed as VOWS about 4 months ago, once Jack (Drummer boy) and Ad (Persian Synth extraordinaire!) jumped on board we were all happy. Now we're a typical dysfunctional family.

You’re in a young band (as far as ages go) what music do you listen to get inspired?
I'm 21 this year! That's scary! Well I suppose it'd be cliché to say that we all have extremely wide ranging music tastes, yeah? I mean, the artist that really inspires me, although we're nothing like them, is Rou from Enter Shikari. They really put me in the mood to actively write and perform. Lee is lead guitar, so he just locks himself in a room for days on end drip feeding Bloc Party riffs into his mind. Jack (Drummer boy!) was probably a huge influence on where the direction of our sound took. He's heavily into hip-hop and you can really feel that with most of the new material that we have.

Yea man I can hear a little bit of everything from your latest track, what can your fans expect from the up-coming EP?
Ah, thanks Fred! We're trying to mix it up a bit. Well we've got two or three more tracks that we need to sort out for the EP-release. It's been quite a struggle to whittle down the set that we've been gigging for a while into the ones that we feel are the strongest, and also songs that we feel will blend together well.

What so far has been the best experience whilst being in VOWS?
Spector was a huge gig for us, and just a huge experience during the whole day for us as well. We've got a song called 'I am Better with You' that we've vowed (ha, pun!) to only play live and never record and there's a break in it that goes 'OH-OH-OH-OH'. So when a filled room chanting that along with us, that was quite powerful. The whole room singing the breakdown to COLOURS at Taylor Johns House in Coventry was quite moving too. I think we're all just enjoying being in a solid set up where everyone's happy with the creative direction.

Finally... If you could support ANY band ever in existence who would it be and why?
Wow. Erm, I'd love to support Scroobious Pip just so I could have an excuse to grow my beard out. But I'm gonna' take a stab in the dark and say The Cure, that's probably the only band that all of us equally love. Plus, Jimmy could do a Get up Kids cover of Close to Me and his life would be complete.

My thanks to Jack from VOWS for answering the questions, their new single is available to stream below, but you can download it soon. For more details go to their facebook page.

Friday's Finest #4

This week we've somehow managed to get out the article, the reason this time is that myself (Fred) and that Jordan (at Slate The Disco) was refused entry to the USA to play at SXSW. This was down to us both being 'too cool' by the US State of Homeland Security. Pfft, I know, it's a real headache, but we have a treat install for you!

Ivory Seas - Boundary (Slate The Disco):
The band takes an infectiously rhythmical and humanistic approach to their songs which can be heard in their first single ‘Boundary’. Formed in Autumn 2011, Ivory Seas are a four-piece band from London with members Adam Heron (Voice, Guitar), Thomas Walker (Voice, Guitar, Keys), Brendan O’Boyle (Bass) and George Latham (Drums). Working with producer Richard Formby (Wild Beasts, Egyptian Hip Hop) on their first offering ‘Boundary’, the band create an intricate blend of flowing rhythms and textures overlaid with a humanist lyrical expression. Ivory Seas recently played as part of Artrocker’s New Blood Festival, and are soon heading into the studio to record their début Ep.

In Golden Tears - Underneath The Balance (It's All Indie):
We've been long time admirers of the German foursome, now they've enlisted a further member and the sound has got so much more! In Golden Tears’ uplifting Rock is driven by a crunching bass line and commanding vocals from Patrick H Kowalewski, with their signature tones coming in at the bridge they've still kept the guitars that we well in love with but... This is everything I've wanted from them, they've delivered the goods here, we knew them as boys, and with this track they are now men!

Hotel Mexico – A Space In A Loveless Field (Slate The Disco):
Hotel Mexico are a band from Kyoto in Japan. Their brand of washed out guitar jams on début EP His Jewelled Letter Box caught the eyes and ears of various websites last year including the likes of Gorilla vs Bear and Noisey . The first of two forthcoming tracks to début is ‘A Space in the Loveless Field’ an airy, yearning song that recalls the glow of Ariel Pink at his poppiest. Later on we’ll reveal ‘Wolves running through the Desert’, a swaggering guitar-pop song that has flecks of 80s synth, and a hugely addictive guitar riff.

VOWS - Lay Me Down (It's All Indie):
After their stunning début track; 'Colours' the Midlands six-piece, and since having shared the stage with the likes of Spector, Various Cruelties and recently Brazil's CSS they're certainly one to keep an eye on. As we found out when they sprung the remix of 'Colours' (Matty Moon Remix) on us and a live demo from their forthcoming EP they're a creative bunch that'll go far if they keep on the tracks that they're on!

Hot Chip - Flutes (Unanimous):

AND UNTIL THEN... KEEP IT INDIE!

Track of the year is ... New Ivory - A Knight

New Ivory have smashed their way to the top spot on our 'Track of the year' for 2011. They first caught our eyes way back in early June, here is the original post.

They won with 345 votes out of the 1045 cast. A close second place is the best performing international act for the second year running, and third was a close battle between two bands that are very close to each others hearts, Safari and VOWS.

Here is a run down of the top 5:
2nd - In Golden Tears - Urban Emotions
3rd - Safari - So I See
4th - VOWS - Colours
5th - Films Of Colour - Actions

The rest (in no particular order)
The Spires - Fireworks
Is Tropical - South Pacific
Peace - Bblood
Rapids! - Littleblood
Waylayers - Hear No Lies
I Heart Sharks - Neuzeit
Hey Sholay - Wishbone

This has been a fantastic year for me and all of my contributors.

We all wish you a very happy new year and have a great 2012, I know I will.

Fred Bambridge (Editor, Founder, Admin, Promoter and all round good-guy)

Track of the week... Vows - Colours

Vows is one of those hidden gems, a band that combines more than the one genre to give you something different. They have aspects of Rock, Tropical, Alternative, Indie-Pop and some funky cowbells to create something I like to call 'Shakin'-Pop', something to dance to yet something that you can appreciate and love over and over again. What's best is that this band is a young band, they surely have a bright future ahead of them if they keep up making music like this!

They will also be appearing in our mixtape of 'The Best of 2011' simply down to this song, if you fancy grabbing yourself a copy of this song they are giving it away for free on their facebook page, just click the link, like and download it. I know you'd love it, so just go on and download it!
