EP Review... Rova - Strings EP

After a while listening to their demos and acoustic songs, it's great to hear Rova develop their live performances and put them onto recording, they're amazing live and are one of those bands that you just have to see live. Here is their début EP up getting reviewed by us too. Here is what we made of it!

Strings:
It's really refreshing to hear a song like this, fresh and strong vocals with the light guitar tones playing away in the background make this track a calming track to unwind to after a long days work. We've already been playing the track on loop as it's so stunning to listen to, Rova can easily be one of the next big bands to break out, based on this track alone I think it's highly likely.
Out of 10: 9/10

Mama Save Me:
This one is also a lovely 5 minute epic with great choruses, guitar tones to calm you down and lyrics to really sing your heart out to. The band love to make long songs, and this one being the centre-piece of the EP they've made it a stunning one at that! It reminds me of what would happen when Foals met Radiohead, the high guitar tones with the experimental Rock, they're going to win lots of fans over down to this song for sure!
Out of 10: 9/10

Measured Motion:
This was the song I really hoped would be recorded some day, and thankfully the band thought the same too. When I saw them live this was the set-closer, and for a good reason too! This is the song I want everyone to know them by, a lovely slow song that just shows the listener what the band's capability is. This honestly goes down as one of my tracks of the year, the way the track builds up to the flourish at the end is just amazing! Rova, I hope you stay together for a long time to come, this song is just beautiful!
Out of 10: 10/10

This is a real find! An un-signged band that's this good won't stay un-signed for long, I loved every track in the EP and everything the band has to offer. They've made one of my favourite tracks of the year with 'Measured Motion' and I hope they can continue making great music for years to come!

Track of the week... Rova - Strings

I've been waiting a long time to put Rova as my 'Track of the week', and now that has happened. 'Strings' is the first song off their new EP of the same name. The EP will consist of three tracks but I think 'Strings' will be the best of the three. We've previously seen them live and introduced you to them and this is great progress for the young band from Slough.

Friday's Finest

Yes it's back, after two weeks of either one of us being away or otherwise occupied here is the first 'Friday's Finest' of April, and it's a banger! Us and our pals at Slate The Disco have got you 5 more tracks to listen to over the weekend. Enjoy!

It's All Indie: Rova – I Always
‘I Always’ is one of those tracks that immediately stands out and you and claims to be the epic track it’s made out to be. With a tumble of guitars at the forefront of the song and a really charismatic chorus the lads have it all. Even though this song is over a year old it’s not stopped us playing it over and over again!

Slate The Disco: Cut Your Hair - Utah In Pictures
Awash with summery haze and glorious harmonies, 'Utah In Pictures' is the début single from Catalan three-piece Cut Your Hair, released 30th April on Mushroom Pillow. Childhood friends from the village of Anserall perched high in the Pyrenees, Sergio, Aleix and Ed dream up an appropriately sun-bleached reading of rock’n'roll’s eternal narrative, small-town escapism.

It's All Indie: Blood Red Shoes - Hundred Million Percent
With their third album finally out, the first single released off the album was ‘Cold’, the B-Side on the vinyl version of the song was ‘One Million Percent’ and it’s a ‘back-to-your-roots’ sound from the Brighton based two-piece. It’s full of deep guitar riffs and those vocals their fans just can’t get enough of!

Slate The Disco: Boxes – Red Skies
New single ‘Red Skies’ released on Monday 30th April through Bow Records. Following on from last year’s award-winning Silent Alarm EP, multi-instrumentalist Boxes returns with his new single ‘Red Skies’ taken from upcoming debut album Stickers, which is out 7th May.Entwining healthy amounts of pop with dance music, the latest release from Boxes is undeniably a song for evocative movie montages, with its soaring, anthemic choruses and sweet lyrics. Boxes, better known to his mum as Carey Willetts, has totally immersed himself into current guise with his guitars, loop pedals and iPad.

Unanimous: These Ghosts - Throw The Windows Open
Our unanimous choice of the week comes in the form of ‘Throw The Windows Open’ a beautiful piece of haunting ambient alt rock from Norfolk outfit These Ghosts.
The choice came about not because These Ghosts have revealed the video for their anthemic latest single ‘Throw the Windows Open’ but the band have also announced they'll be playing St Pauls Church in Cambridge on April 14th, for which both Slate & It's All Indie will be attending and recommend you do the same!

Come back next week for more, until then... check back for more music updtaes!

Introducing... Rova

Rova are from London and they've caught our eye in the past week. After witnessing a valiant performance at The Lexington in London we've been popping onto their soundcloud account and giving their tracks a right old listen. Considering that they're all demos (and there is one acoustic track) they're all full of melodies, lyrics and riffs that can win anyone over who has a great taste in guitar music.

They cite some influences on their bandpage and first is Radiohead as and is an obvious comparable to prop them up against. But I'd say they've got some Arctic Monkeys and in their track Dangerous some light National tones. If you're ever around when they're playing near you, go. Their live performance alone can win you over!

For fans of // Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth

Gig Review... Rova @ The Lexington, Islington, London, 21st March 2012

We went to pop along to The Wild Mercury Sound's single launch at The Lexington in Islington and we bumped into yet another band that can easily go a long way! Rova are from Slough, which as far as music goes is only famous for having Viva Brother... Yea so less about the bad bands and more about the great right!

Well Rova came out of the blocks with a stunning couple of tracks, with such a polished sound already it's no wonder someone quoted saying "If you liked them the next band will blow you away", and they surely did! The highlight of the set for me was the track 'Million', it's a six minute epic and the lads put every bit of energy into it for the full duration of the track. I'd highly recommend seeing them live, so if you get the chance please go, they're a great live band!
