Frank Turner closes first day of Standon Calling [GALLERY]

Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls last night closed the first day of Standon Calling Festival in Hertfordshire. The festival during the rest of the year is a genteel manor nestled in the quaint village, but today the politically charged Frank Turner rocked on up with his band The Sleeping Souls to play a series of song from his back catalogue.

He used up every last bit of energy for the performance, and below is a series of photos from instagram that showed it!

Saint Raymond packs out The Big Top at Standon Calling

Callum Burrows brought Saint Raymond to Standon Calling today, and playing rather low down the billing we were expecting a small crowd. Oh how we were wrong! I guess it goes down to his anthematic tunes, catchy choruses, the massive exposure he's had with supporting Haim, being played on the BBC a lot - on Radio 1, 6 Music and Glastonbury.

So when they took to the stage the crowd flocked like birds on migration to see Callum and co perform. You could see the band were clearly enjoying themselves on stage with massive grins coming from everyone. They played a brilliant set with their biggest and best songs saved for the Standon faithful.

I could easily say this was the best performance of the day, but no two sets here are comparable. The highlights of the set was his recent single "I Want You""Young Blood" and the track that got me into them, "Everything She Wants", which oddly was the track the whole crowd was singing along to! The end of their set was energetic and enthusiastic, giving a long lasting memory for the crowd! Hopefully they'll all buy his album when it's out, you know it's going to be good!

Waste open Standon Calling with energetic set

Waste today opened the annual festival in the tiny village of Standon. Nestling in the rolling hills in Hertfordshire just off the A10 and only a few miles away from London, Standon Calling is one of the best 'small' festivals around. And Waste today opened up the weekend after winning a competition.

The band from Stevenage - not far from Standon - played a solid set of energetic songs, some reminiscent of a young Arctic Monkeys crossed with vocals that reminded us of Damon Albarn's Gorillaz project. With a solid fan-base down the front the band were lapping up the attention, the highlight of the set was their track "Blow" - which we had as our 'Track of the week' earlier in the year - and as more and more people gathered towards the end of their set.

Finishing off with a solid new track expect to see them on the bill next year, and hopefully more festivals too!

10 Acts You Have To See At Standon Calling

We're off to Standon Calling this year, and with the Hertfordshire festival being a highly respected event this year they've managed to bag some quite amazing bands and performers. Check out who we're excited to see below.

Maximo Park

Now here's a band that's well use to playing the festival circuit, having been around for a while now expect the Newcastle band to bring out the hits and give you a performance to remember for the rest of the summer!

Peace

The B-Town boys are back on the road and with a new album in the wings, expect a cover of Binary Finary's "1998" along-side some of their hits such as "Wraith", "Bloodshake" and new songs "Money" and "World Pleasure".

Waste

The local lads - Stevenage - are opening the mainstage for this year after winning Standon Calling's un-signed competition. They've played a handful of shows so far, but you can check out their debut demo "Blow" below, which, of course we love!

Toy

Heavenly signees released their debut album last year and are continuing with the push with playing some festivals. Expect some dark and brooding songs from the London band.

Saint Raymond

The Nottingham youngster will be bringing himself and his band down to Standon to play a selection of songs from his forthcoming album, expect some bright and spritely indie jangles with infectious hooks.

East India Youth

William Doyle, better known by his stage name East India Youth will be bringing his electronic tracks from Bournemouth to the field in Standon performing tracks from his first album, "Total Strife Forever".

Say Lou Lou

Australian and Swedish by genetics, the sisterly duo will be performing their dreamy electronic smash hits to Standon, we're expecting some gorgeous vocals and some great melodies, do not miss this set!

Maddox

Re-formed for their yearly jaunt to the festival, the band shares members with Waste (see above). But with some old-school Indie tunes amongst their repertoire be sure to stick around and wake up early for these guys!

Amber Run

Having been on tour with Kodaline in recent months the band would've surely got a whole lot better over the past year, and with their latest melodic anthem "I Found" just being released expect to hear some future hits in their set!

Eliza and the Bear

Having seen them back in 2011/2012 - I can't honestly remember when it was -  playing their first ever show in London I'm very excited to see how they've progressed since. With an album on the cards soon be sure to pop on over to see them play!
