Gig Review... Tycho @ Brudenell Social Club, 5th October 2014

On a cold night in the northern city of Leeds, Brudenell Social Club was warmed with the refreshingly ambient indie stylings of San Francisco outfit Tycho. For anyone who isn't already in the know, Tycho is the brainchild of Scott Hansen who, as well as producing and writing as Tycho, is known for his graphic design and photography works under the alias ISO50. Together, the two projects walk hand-in-hand with a big emphasis on visual projections with their live performance. 

Tycho's music has come on in leaps and bounds since the debut album 'Sunrise Projector' was released ten years ago. Past material has focussed more on the use of retro warmth but the latest offering, 'Awake', has presented a more progressive take on electro indie.

Live, Hansen is accompanied by three other band members to produce a purely instrumental musical experience. Greeted by a full crowd of enthusiastic fans, Tycho recreated tracks from their discography to the same production style as the record. Although the live element in the band's energy lacked, the use of mesmerising visuals attached with each song helped to explore themes of childhood, dream landscapes and nostalgia. It's hard to comprehend a full set of instrumental mellow synth electro and at times the set grew slightly repetitive but overall, Tycho managed to draw in the crowd with their reverb-soaked sound. 

Key tracks from the set included big tracks such as 'A Walk', 'Awake', 'Montana' and 'Spectre'. Although much of Tycho's music is more heavily appreciated in a calmer environment through headphones, the San Francisco outfit did a great job of emphasising the intimacy of the small Brudenell Social Club by creative an immersive atmosphere.

EP Review... The Cads - Spark Up In Style EP

The Cads, are a 5-piece Tropical, Electro, Indie band from Ipswich in Suffolk. They have supported Darwin Deez on his German tour and have played a whole host of shows throughout 2010 generating a lot of interest in this lovely band!

Rivers:
With a lovely gentle guitar draping over one another this song reminds me of Foals, the drum and bass both kick in and your ears are sent to heaven, the chorus kicks and and you can't help but bop your head to the funky grooves they have got going on! Towards the end the pace goes up a notch, and so does the quality of the song, we now have a new band to watch out for! "I'm shoegazing" indeed!

Lanterns:
One of the old tracks I've heard before, and this still gets me in the happy mood with multiple vocals caressing the stunning instruments. A tumbling guitar around the 2:40 mark reminds you of Bloc Party and then they kick it back. The chorus comes back into play and then it stops, Wonderful, seriously!

Interlude:
A cross between rainymood.com and an acoustic version of Friendly Fires, although this is an interlude it's a peaceful song with rain in the background, bass warming your heart and twinkling guitars echoing throughout the song.

Skin:
My faveourite track off the EP, and here it does sound like the best parts of Friendly Fires and Foals. The fast drumming, perfectly placed vocals, tidy guitar strumming, the drumming sounds so effortless but at the same time you wonder how much his arms ache keeping up with the fast tempo of the song, and the bassist does a very good job keeping up and getting those throbbing beats rippling through you throughout the song!

This Place Is Havoc:
Another old song from the vaults, this was one of the very first tracks they wrote, and may I say, one of the best too! I can really see this song being an anthem for Indie-kids, it expresses everything they (The Cads) are about. Brilliant song writing, pitch-perfect singing, stunning guitar play, tight bass and that oh so sweet drumming, or to simplify it... brilliant in every way!

Selah:
One track I've no heard much of so this will be an interesting listen. The Cads have gone all minimal-rock on us! But after hearing it was the brain-child of Tom and Stefan, I can't help but adore this track, the instrumental feel (except for a few rumbles from them during the song), it is once again (as Interlude was) another great track that needs more exposure so people can find out this enchanting band.

Track of the week... The Spires - Fireworks

The Spires come from Sheffield and create Dance, Electro music that can get anyone looking down and seeing their foot tapping away! They are a three-piece that combine Synths, Guitars, Drums and amazing Vocals to create this amazing track.



The track starts off with a ticking synth keyboard then flourishes into the verse which builds and builds until the chorus hits. The vocals start the ball rolling with a warm synth flowing in the background and the guitar riff coming in over the top. I first thought they must use a drum machine because the drums are so neat and tidy. Nope, they use an actual person! Kudos to him, brilliant work! The whole song is adrenaline filled and is a real ear pleaser!

It's All Indie: Top 20 - #2

Kele - Tenderoni

From the start this is a club hit. His first single has had much mixed reviews from Bloc Party fans on the forum. Sounds like a instrumental mash up of Bodyrox and Wiley, with Keles vocals over the top. Still, ever since I heard it on Zane Lowe on Radio 1 I have gone from hate, to love. Now? I just love it! Building into a throbbing climax, halting momentarily before kicking back into a massive moment of club euphoria, this will be a vital summer hit, NO WAIT IT IS.



Bands going on hiatus often means one of three things: the group have fallen out, the band have run out of ideas, or the lead singer wants to go it alone. In the case of Bloc Party, it appears to be the latter, as Kele Okereke prepares to release his electro-tinged solo début.

It's All Indie: Top 20 - #4

Delphic - Doubt

A lot can be said about this track, and god darn it, I am going the beans on this one! Doubt has scatter-shot electronic squelches, hushed vocals and robotic drum loops are actually more akin to recent Bloc Party. However, Delphic have a lighter touch and greater pop leanings than Kele Okereke's band...



Delphic are one of those bands who can’t really decide what genre of music they want to be, trying to cover at least three (indie, electro and amazing) throughout the course of their single ‘Doubt.’ 'Doubt' opens with lots of vocals layered on top of each other. The chorus is very anthem-esque and they’re obviously gearing up for the rest of the year gigging with this song and getting a headline spot at a summer festival.

Album Review... Crystal Fighters - Star Of Love

The London outfit’s debut is as colourful as the album cover, the five-piece fusing the Basque instrumentation with the feverish bass of any electro outfit. It's an album comprised of an intriguing mix of Basque folk music with electronic elements. In truth though, there's very little blending going on; instead it's more of a tale of two differing types of music that somehow ended up on the same record. So far, so brave.

Solar System:
With the bass whacked up to 10 on this record and fast intence drumming this track gets the whole crowd on the dance-floor moving and shaking their bones out of their bodies! Fast pace and furious in spots they seem to have got the Klaxons edge but with a Spanish folk twist.
Out of 10: 8/10

Xtatic Truth:
Starts off with a very different feel, a lovely acoustic Spanish guitar, hush vocals come in, fast drumming and beats flow in too... then WHAM, the chorus, everything drops, then it goes into a melee of madness with the beats from the laptop playing a big part in making this track sound massive!

I Do This Everyday:
...is more of the track you would associate their sound according to the myspace description, folk and electro. Different main singer this time, and also with a harder rock influence and more of the brilliant guitar work and laptop twiddly bits. This track (I assume) would be better on drugs, maybe weed, but I don't condone that do I!
Out of 10: 7/10

Champion Sound:
Now on the internet this track has 3 names, Champion Sound (Luke Smith Mix), Champion Sound (Alt Version) and Champion Sound. Now they are all the same song. This is a lovely track with the folk influence coming up trumps here as this is a nice diversion from the madness and brilliant heavy electro feel from the past 3 songs. This continetal feel makes the listener feel like it is a nice hot day in Europe, just lovely.
Out of 10: 9/10

Plage:
French for Beach, basically he sings about going down to the beach with his girlfriend in the early morning. Once again (as Champion Sound) this is a very summery song. Better? Debatable, but they do continue the odd instrument playing throughout as they use wooden bricks(?) and beat them to the sound of the calming vocals.

In The Summer:
The biggest track I heard of them so far, such a summer banger, shame they are only getting noticed for the Foals support slots now. But still, if you were one of the lucky ones and got the 12" before they were big, good for you, because this would sound epic trough your speakers with that nice crackle from vinyl players. Also it is back to the electro-esque musical styling that got me into them.

At Home:
The longest track on the album, but honestly I want it to go on forever. From the outset this track invites you in with the folk-electro-crossover sound that I now feel at home with. Once again it is the female vocal making the track what it is, a lovely sexy voice loses your mind when she is standing in front of you all sleek and (hmm) yea! I know I am keep on going on about this but the summer feel is the biggest it has been on this track, paradise!

I Love London:
Another frenetic beat driven affair, but this time with a grittier punk club influence (or perhaps “Basque-tronica”). This track is getting a wealth of air time on radio due to the absolute bass driven and almost touristy song... Crystal Fighters seamlessly blend guitar led folk rhythms with pulsating tribal dance music and an eclectic mix of both male and female vocals.
Out of 10: 7/10

Swallow:
Now with the Jamaican feel, (yes Jamaican) to the start of this song you are lulled into thinking it is going to be one of the slower tracks. Wait, nope, wrong. The dubstep beat kicks in and you are treated with a brilliant side of folk... dubstep! But normally I would hate listening to dubstep but they make this song effortlessly brilliant.

With You:
Frantic opening and more of the lovely female vocals make this seem like a top 4o track. Thankfully they haven't sold out yet. As the bridge suggests, they like to keep that folk element in their music.

Follow:
The ending to the album, and this track just combines what they have been all about in the album, folk mashed with electro and catchy lyrics. A furious chorus and the song just keeps on building and building. What a way to end the album of what has been the most fun to listen to so far this year.

INTERVIEW... Huunter

An interview from Huunter.

What would you describe your music as?

This is something that I struggle with. I worry that people might mistake it for a center of the road dance or classical album when its neither. Ive kind of settled with Modernist Classical Electronic Dance music.

What would be your major influences?

The album idea came to me when I was at Lollapalooza 2008. I was watching Booka Shade perform and what blew me away by their performance was the crowd. Each person was dancing to every kick drum beat and synth hit, I stood there watching in awe. I had never really listened to dance music let alone gone to a dance concert so seeing people responding to music like that was completely new to me. Just watching everyone dancing made me excited and made me want to dance. I wanted to be drawn into this communal dancing experience! I knew right then that I wanted to write music that would well up similar feelings in a crowd but I wanted to use classical instruments instead of synths. I worked pretty much on that seed of an idea for about 5 or 6 months and in that time I finished and early version of the title track and started on The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Which is where I hit a wall and realized that I wasn't really getting to the heart of the music I wanted to create. I then started listening to cheesy dance music like Tiesto to understand what in the music makes crowds communally dance like they did at Booka Shade. This inspired me to write "The Antitelephone" and work more on the first two tracks but I still didn't feel great them. The breakthrough came when I wrote The Entanglement. The song was written in about a day or two and it made more sense than all of the other tracks. So I went back and rewrote the other three. Just to give you an idea about the length of the writing process: The Entanglement literally took a matter of hours to write, had only one version and no rewrites. The Ultraviolet Catastrophe and The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle took about 10 months to write and had over 100 versions and as many rewrites. The Antitelephone took about 6 months had about 50 versions and about 30 rewrites.

The biggest influence in my mixing came from U2's "No Line On The Horizon" album. One of the first things that you will notice is Bono's crackly imperfect voice. And I realized that if there is any band in the world that has enough money to afford to make an album sound perfect, its U2. But they didn't make it perfect and all the vocal mistakes are there and unpolished. I wanted to do the same thing with the sound of my record. But since I am constrained to the perfect 1's and 0's of a computer I tried to mix the album with vintage effects to create a crackly analogue sound. Also I got it mastered on vintage equipment to add more analogue warmth and crackle. I absolutely hate the boring digital perfection of other electronic artists so I wanted to avoid that.

How long have you you been making music for?

Off and on since 2002 grade but not seriously until about 2007

What instruments or software do you use to create your work?

I use Logic 8 to write just about everything. I started out as a guitarist and sometimes Ill write things and transcribe them for other instruments. I have grown pretty tired of guitar and I really don't have any interest in playing it on a record. Hopefully that will change down the road!

And what is the creation process like? Do you lay down a beat and work from there or start off with playing around with instruments?

Usually I will choose a tempo and start laying down ideas. I put down as many short phrases as I can with out editing them. Once I have a couple down I will add about five layers of complimentary instrumentation. Then I choose my favorite and start building a song off of it. The Antitelephone and The Entanglement's idea seeds were written in the same day in the same Logic project. The Entanglement was a combination of two ideas put together. For The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle I wanted to write a dance song with Gregorian chant. Somewhere in the 100 or so rewrites it be came an operatic duet. I got a vocal teacher at my college to sing a couple of lines in Latin for the song. The female vocal was a lady that I had heard sing a solo at my church. The Ultraviolet Catastrophe's various parts were put together fairly shortly after Lollapalooza, the only thing that really changed in the rewrites was the drums and bass.

Any plans for single releases?

I released a single version of The Entanglement which is being promoted in the UK and Europe. It is going to be played on BBC 3's Late Junction Show. I also animated a video for the single (which there is a link at the bottom of the page).

(if so), would there be any bsides or remixes surfacing with the new single release?
I don't really produce any b-sides. I either work on something until it gets on the album or I throw it away pretty quickly. I am planning on releasing a remix album of The Ultraviolet Catastrophe in the late fall.

What has been your favourite artist from It's All Indie?

Although not very indie, Bloc Party/Kele would be my favorite. They caught my attention with Silent Alarm and oddly enough kind of followed my shifting musical interest over they years as they changed into an electronic band. That being said I do hope that they get back together and get back to their punk/rock roots.

(and finally), what would be your 'Track of the day'?

Lemon by U2. That song is so far ahead of its time. Impressionistic lyrics set against a synthy/gated guitar line and groovy dancy bass and drum combo. There is also a cello interlude which I love. If there is one song from any artist's cannon of songs I wish I could steal its Lemon. Zooropa, from which Lemon is taken, as an album 15 years ahead of its time. Radiohead gets so much credit with Kid A being the first great electronic rock crossover album. When U2 did it 10 years earlier and much better than they did (in my opinion).

The Inbox: Superhumanoids, Champagne Riot,The Good Natured, Joshephine

SUPERHUMANOIDS:
Superhumanoids are a Los Angeles four piece, set up as an electronic experiment to escape the everyday of the everyday. Dreams of a more public lifestyle have taken this reverie to an unconventional conclusion - a troupe that incorporates equal parts harmony and dissonance, programming and organic instrumentation, lush harmonies and sparse arrangements. an exploration of pop through a spaced-out, kaleidoscopic lens.

The band take their musical cues from a diverse array of sources - neu!, The Beach Boys, The Strokes, The Chills, Kate Bush to name a few. Their debut EP titled Urgency was recorded and produced by the band themselves and will be released by independent label Hit City USA in July of 2010. Previous releases include the contemporary individual digital 7" was released last January.

CHAMPAGNE RIOT!:
Champagne Riot is the brainchild of two Scandinavians, Caspar Bock and Anders Reuter. In their own words “Their mission is to create perfect pieces of timeless pop music that are sophisticated and gloriously irresistible”. They are set to release their debut double A-sided single “Heart Stab/ A Friend of A Friend” on the 27^th September on xxx records. Champagne Riot started as a solo project of Danish born, at the time Berlin based, Caspar Bock who released the EP “Paris and I” on the American indie pop label Shelflife Records in 2008. Shelflife approached Caspar within the first week of uploading the project’s two first demos to Myspace. The EP release in October 2008 generated a substantial amount of blog hype and overwhelming reviews as well as national airplay and mainstream media features in Caspar’s home country Denmark.



Champagne Roit make music for people to cry to and is light-years better than anything Lady Gaga has done, and that's for sure! Their debut release in the UK will be a double a-side single consisting of the songs “Heart Stab” and “A Friend Of A Friend” and will be released in September 27^th on xxx records.

The Good Natured:
Until yesterday I thought all 18 year olds in Newbury did was nick sweets from Spar and set fires to bins, but being introduced to Sarah McIntosh aka The Good Natured has proved otherwise. At once, she arrives as a compelling new talent. A real find and she is forlorn, wary, quietly despairing and sad, even when the beats are house-esque and fast or skittering and drum'n'bass-ish. It is a electro pop at its very best!



Her new single 'Your Body Is A Machine' was written by McIntosh and produced by Dan Foat and Nathan Boddy (Delphic, I Blame Coco).

Josehephine is a new folktropic voice forged in the heart of the North of England. 'I Think It Was Love’ EP is set for release August 23^rd on Ark Recordings. An patchwork of influences from West African high life to her local heroes Morrissey & Marr... from the inspirational activist/guitarist/songwriter Odetta to modern US weird folk music.



Listening to 'I Think It Was Love', you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd stumbled upon some lost classic soul recording, rather than a young musician from Manchester. Her voice is something incredible; warm, wise, confident and able to stop even the hardest of cynics in their tracks.

It's All Indie Spotlight: Huunter

Huunter are from the USA, Brooklyn New York to be accurate and they have released a brand spnaking new album 'The Ultraviolet Catastrophe'. It is many things, modern classical meets electronic dance. It’s easy dance to, and with 4 electronic tracks it is also 40 minutes of pure electro fun. Lloyd Bourne (the one member of Huunter) sent me the album and having listened to it, I have to admit, it is a brilliant listen!



The most interesting track on the album is 'The Entanglement.' This is where Bourne creates a most harmoniously infectious, layered sound you can’t help but move to. It is also the closer to the album and the piano accompanied by the drums reminds me of late 90's dance music, the synths also make this track into my pick from the album.

It's All Indie Spotlight: Chrome Rainbow

Chrome Rainbow are from Nottingham, UK and they list themselves as Alternative-Electro, also they have influences from Foals, Dananananaykroyd, Errors, Three Trapped Tigers, These New Puritains, Good Shoes, Tubelord, Vampire Weekend, Tall Ships, We Have Band, and many more! Chrome Rainbow formed in the autumn of 2009 and are Ronan Charlton (Synth/Samples) Callum Ballard (Guitar/Keyboard) Callum McIntosh (Bass/Drums).



I have been sent very rough demos but you can tell that they can polish them up and make them into some chilling electro tunes. I gave 'Swords' a listen to and at the beginning sounds like electro coming from the depths of the night-time, distortion and synths play a big part in this with the melody coming from the solo guitar. Around the two minute mark it sounds a bit like a foals remix! Much of the same can't be said of 'Skarooven Blues', it too starts off with a dark synth but then follows a more guitar based song, and this does sound better I have to admit! The vocals are a tad too quiet for me but it's only a demo so they can be forgiven for it, and once again this does sound like a foals remix, good stuff here! I am adding 'Skarooven Blues' to my July Mixtape but I can assume you won't wait for that so below are a few links!

Ahead of the curve... Adnan Kurtov

Hello all, been a while, but to create some posts I have decided to re-introduce this sub-section. Today it is the turn of Adnan Kurtov.

He is from the Republic Of Macedonia, Veles to be exact. He is a up and coming Power-pop / Art-pop artist, with his signiture track titled 'I Follow You' having got some notice in his homeland he sent a email to me to get his profile up a notch. With flowing lyrics, twisting bass coming in and out of the drum beats and a touch of the guitar he has managed to create a track that can be played in any nightclub.

Track of the day... Them:Youth - Fever Rising

What do you get when you cross Delphic with Pendulum? This fantastic track called 'Fever Rising' by up and coming band Them:Youth. This London 4 piece is definitely going for big anthem tunes, as you can tell from this track!



Their songs have a melancholic edge, combined with an electro beat, and has some funky synths that sound like something a well known dance act should be doing, that somehow makes their songs sound more exciting every time you give it a listen.

Them:Youth finally announced October 2010 as the release date for their highly anticipated (possibly epic) debut album!

Track of the day... We Have Band - Oh

It has been around 2 months now since We Have Band released their debut album WHB. But thanks to a select few, I have somehow become more and more interested in one of the tracks. Oh! is their first single, with a whole album of high-energy, catchy dance tunes and sing-along, Oh! is simply the best song from the album!



If you haven’t heard of We Have Band yet, they are a do-it-yourself trio, with Darren Bancroft on vocals, drums and sampler, Dede W-P on vocals, percussion and sampler and Thomas W-P on vocals, guitar, bass and programming, Their debut album, simply titled WHB was released on April 5th and it shows the band’s sound has grown into a more serious kind of alternative electro rock.

Ahead of the curve... Death Metal Disco Scene

I have a real treat for you today, Death Metal Disco Scene, a London based band that already have some recognition for remixing such artists as Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen, The Verve, Bat For Lashes. David James Billing apparently started this as a one man project, it gave banging tracks from day one, as soon both Major and Independent labels have sniffed the smell of fresh and easily marketable talent.

He then though of making some of his own music, he found the special ingredient with a close friend, Scorch Shepherd.. Today they are ready with a set of songs to play at every gig, with a few bangers such as 21, Criminals and The Dead. BBC Radio One has already played 21. This is a sneaky little Indie-Rock song that reveals its powers the second the chorus kicks in, showing off its catchy and danceable energy.

Track of the day... Casiokids - Fot I Hose

The Norwegian band Casiokids is an electronic act, but with a few quirks involved. Guitars, Bass, Keyboards, Cassette player, Cello. They have only been playing live for quite some time now but they are getting more and more fans whenever they venture from Norway into the rest of Europe.

Fot I Hose is the type of funky little track you would hear while buying cheap booze abroad, but never could get the name of, because you are either British (and therefore don't want to speak another language) or simply because the staff were distracted by the song itself!

Track of the day... Kele - Rise

Kele just won't keep still, after only a few days after Young Legionnaire posted their debut song ont the internet Kele pops up with TWO new songs. Maybe it's to push his project furthur ahead of other Bloc Party side projects, or not. But still a busy week for Bloc Party fans!



Lullaby-like vocals usher in a massive, elated, house-music-style chorus, armed with super-positive words of club encouragement such as "You are stronger than you think", "Up to the light/Brothers and sisters unite". An old-school house singer bolshily takes over vocal duties, singing "I'll take you over", before the song turns into vaguely Daft Punk-esque, edgier territory. Fades out with glistening keys, finishing on an absolute high.

He has also premiered Walk Tall, another track from his debut album on the facebook/blog/myspace site. Below are 3 tracks we so far have.

Track of the day... Simian Mobile Disco - Audacity Of Huge

Huge? It's got that pair of English guys who did 'Hustler' and 'I Belive' - whose old band did the song their loucher peers Justice turned into a transatlantic model for late-2000s house-as-rock hedonism. Huge? It's got that Chemical Brothers. You know it's got that Barack Obama. It's got that "grape Kool-Aid-filled swimming pool," with bass-line pool furniture and pitch-tweaked choral Marco Polo, all under a lofty laserarium sky. Huge

In short, new Simian Mobile Disco single "Audacity of Huge"-- from upcoming album Temporary Pleasure, the follow-up to 2007's small-scale smash Attack Decay Sustain Release is a limber, name-dropping, ear-catching body-mover, sleek and uncluttered and populist. Just to seal the deal, one of the most crossover-friendly electronic dance groups works with Chris Keating, singer for one of Brooklyn's more popular hippie art-rock groups. I can see "Audacity of Huge" being... well, pretty big.

Track of the day... Delphic - Counterpoint

The song that I seem to find myself always listening to from the album is “counterpoint”, which I believe is the first single released last year prior to the album.

It seems to be a sort of breakup song, with a man seemingly wandering around town aimlessly, telling himself over and over that nothings wrong. the lyrics are a great contrast to the music, which is upbeat and danceable and electro-pop-y like no other. If you like any of the groups I mentioned above, i dare, nay, double doggy dare you, to not love this one.
