Introducing... Rio Rio

Ever wonder what we do on a Saturday at 5pm? Well today we went on bandcamp to have a look around, and we stumbled across Rio Rio! They're a five piece Tropical-Rock, Electro-Rock band and as the name suggests they've got a tropical feel to their anthems. Being based in San Francisco may seem like a great idea, but sadly in the USA they're not so keen on anything guitar based unless the band has been around for ages.

Rio Rio sound like they want to change that, they've not even played their first show and they've already got two amazing tracks recorded. The tracks are, 'Gorilla Gorilla' and ''You Mammoth', they're both recorded really well and the production and mastering sounds great. 'Gorilla Gorilla' is currently a free download on their bandcamp site and I'd highly recommend you download it! It's a great way to get pumped for the summer, it's got great guitar riffs echoing in the background and what's more is that the vocals are really strong, seriously complementing the tropical sound they've made for themselves.

Daily Download... Trophy Wife - The Book Of Right On

This is a cover of a Joanna Newsom song, what Trophy Wife have done here is cover a track, and then turn it into one of their own. The band are currently finishing off their début album after putting out countless songs and an astonishing EP

Single Review... Peace - Follow Baby

Relativity unknown to the masses (but that's soon going to change), Peace are a young Indie-Rock band from the Midlands. They have such a great sound, imagine Tropical-Rock with a dash of Math-Pop, and we have their latest song reviewed just below!

Follow Baby:
Peace a band that we've fell in love with have released a brand new track called 'Follow Baby', it sounds like what would happen if Klaxons went back to 2007 and recorded with The Horrors. This track has it all, great choruses, melodies and a stunning after presence, I've been humming this track ever since I heard it!

Coasts release new video for 'Stay'

Coasts (who finished the year #6 on our sounds of 2012 list) have just released the video to accompany their new track 'Stay'. The Bristol based quintet have an EP on the horizon too and plan to make an album after that!

They're playing at 'Start The Bus' in Bristol on March 14th with Peace (you may know them). SO if you can catch them live! The video however is a tropical flavoured video to behold, this was even shot on location in Australia, so no wonder it's got a great feel to it!

Introducing... Kenetics

Kenetics, a 5 piece band, Biggleswade, a very young band that has already got a reputation, a reputation for being great! They sold out at their first ever gig and have then since played all over the shop, from the local scene to London. Despite none of the band driving they are are convinced about going further afield.

They are constantly writing tracks and are always up for sharing some on the social media sites, and the track that's currently gaining them the brownie points is their head-bopper 'Toothache'. 2012 is set to be a bigger year for them, with the band releasing songs such as 'Toothache' I am sure that they'll produce an absolute deal with a record company, I know it!

Track of the week... Coasts - Pacific

If you haven't heard of Coasts yet, where have you been for the past month! If you don't know they just yet, don't worry here is a brief bio of the band. Hailing from the depths of Bristol, Coasts are Ben Street (Drums), James Gamage (Bass), Liam Willford (Guitar), David Goulbourne (Keys) and Chris Caines (Vocals). Hiding away in the studio for months developing their sound the guys have now hit the circuit running and their first show was in London's Bull & Gate in September of this year.

They only released this song yesterday as a stream on their facebook page, but we've been very lucky enough to have heard the demo. It's a really good improvement on the initial recording, the vocals are slick, the guitar and bass riffs are crunchy and bold, and the organ and drums in the foreground just add to the sexy sound they've created for themselves. You can stream the song just by liking them on facebook and clicking here.

Sounds of 2012 - #6 - Coasts

So were at 5th post in our countdown of bands that'll define 2012, and today it's the turn of Bristol based Tropical-Indie band Coasts. They've had an amazing year supporting the likes of Trophy Wife and Jonquil only after a few months after they announced that they've signed their record deal with Norwich based label 'Intruder'. We've already heard a few of their demos when they were masquerading under their old name and they sounded great, but not as great as their new tracks, one in particular called 'Echoes', they've already got that recorded and it's now doing the rounds on youtube and on the blogs too!

We caught up with them at The Nest in Dalston (London) last month and we were clearly blew away with their musicianship, you can read the review here. Every song is unique in it's own way, with the commanding vocals echoing off the walls and making everyone in the venue turn and admire their skills. With an EP in the pipeline and maybe an album too be sure to give them a listen before they get too big!

Sounds of 2012 - #10 - Safari

We've heavily featured this band since we first heard them in July, and for good reasons too! I suspect a highlight of their year would be playing 'Rhythms Of The World' Festival in Hitchin in their home county. I heard about the masses of young fans ramming the small stage and people bouncing along to the grooves!

They've had a wonderful year and with the début album just round the corner the band released a double A-Side single 'Are We Ready/Doubt' on their website just a few days ago. They only released 'Doubt' on YouTube a few weeks ago, but this is what we though of 'Are We Ready' ... Trumpets open the song with high pitched vocals accompanying it, then bass hit. The tension is broken when the drums and guitar drop. Great bass riffs and brilliant synth samples are used throughout the song. Safari have really crafted a song to be a big hit in the future, what is for sure is it suits the summer well! I wonder if it is them that has supplied this Indian summer we have been having as of late, hmm. What is for certain is this track is a killer.

So with an album out in 2012 they'll be one to keep an eye on for sure, be sure to like their page and to check back every few days because I'm sure they'll announce a show near you soon!

Gig Review... Wild Beasts @ The Junction, Cambridge, 25th November 2011

I was so looking forward to seeing Wild Beasts live, purely because this would be the 4th time seeing the Kendal based band play. After seeing them support The Temper Trap and White Lies within the space of 4 days in 2009 and seeing them playing to a half filled gig at The Troxy in East London it was a present surprise to see the place filled with such a diverse fan-base, from the typical screaming girls in the front row, to the distinguished old gentlemen and his wife towards the back.

IMAGE (c) of Paolo Perona

They opened the show with an instrumental of 'Burning' playing away, then they all appeared on stage to a mass of cheers and hand-claps. 'Lion's Share' and 'Bed Of Nails' were the first two songs they played fully, and with an additional member providing the samples to create a more in-depth sound. They seem to be lapping up the warmth they received from the crowd and that really did show when they played 'Albatross', the track was longer than usual, but the additional 15 to 20 seconds on the last part of the chorus won me over. One of only two songs to survive from the 'Limbo, Panto' era was next, 'Devils Crayon' still has me in awe even to this day and it's a nice step back in time to when they played to barely anyone - and as Tom Fleming put it " we also played here to about 20 Arab business men in Cambridge". The first track off their Mercury Prize nominate 2nd album was next and I still don't know why to this day they have never won the accolade! 'Two Dancers (I)' was the song I sung the most of, purely because of the very dark and sexual lyrics? Maybe, but also because of the atmosphere when the first few notes were played, the place was buzzing! They've just performed one of the best sets I've ever seen, and then they came back to an encore that I've never seen before. The last three tracks were not a shade under magnificent and the last track 'The End Has Come Too Soon' was very apt, the 7:33 long track ending what has been a fantastic night to be a fan of great British music!

Wild Beasts played:
Lion's Share
Bed Of Nails
Albatross
Devils Crayon
The Fun Powder Plot
His Grinning Skull
This Is Our Lot
Loop The Loop
Two Dancers (I)
Reach A Bit Further
Hooting & Howling

Plaything
All The King's Men
The End Has Come Too Soon

If you want to see Wild Beasts, they have just announced more shows in March:
Sun 11th – Warwick, University
Mon 12th – Norwich, Waterfront
Tues 13th – Colchester, Arts Centre
Wed 14th – Exeter, Phoenix
Thur 15th – Falmouth, Pavilion
Fri 16th – Cardiff, Coal Exchange
Sun 17th – Liverpool, Masque Theatre

Gig Review... Coasts @ The Nest, London, 12th November 2011

We have blogged about this amazing band once before, and after a great tip off my their bands manager I was told they were supporting Trophy Wife at a small free gig in London. My my my was it a gig to remember. Yes it was free but small? The capacity was 350 people, but with the stage being the size of a small bedroom the band had a tough time fitting in all of their equipment, and trust me, these guys have a fair few instruments to get in!

The crowd was very eager for them to come on, partly because the first band (one guy and his laptop and moog) was not the biggest crowd grabber. Coasts popped up onto stage, and after the first note of the very first song people instantly turned their heads and were listening. The vocals grabbed everyone by the end of the set - which was cut short due to ramblings before the doors opened - but they seemed to play to more people than the headliners, people were going ecstatic towards the end of their set. With most of the crowd in the front bopping away to the music they know how to write songs that gets the fans attention, and considering most of the crowd have not seen this band before, they all got really into it! A great performance all round from a great bunch of guys, I'll be sure to see them again!

Track of the week... New Navy - Zimbabwe

New Navy are a four piece band based in Sydney and they play Tropical music similar to Two Door Cinema Club and Foals. They call their music 'Biodynamic Beach Bop', sounds very apt as you can really see people on the beach bopping along to this song on a hot summers day.

'Zimbabwe' takes smooth, tropical sounds and combines them with the cleanest guitar tones, noticeable throughout the song. Culminating with tribal drums and heavy percussion, the track would not be out of place playing over beach-front parties or holiday resort clubs.

Introducing... Heavy Hearts

Having already posted about this band you may be forgiven that I already love this youthful band, too right! They have the right combination of influences to create a sound that is their own. With the female vocals combining with the jangly guitars and fast drumming this is one of those hidden gems in my music library.

Their musical ability is proven to be strong in their recordings, such as the song below suggests Heavy Hearts are here to stamp their sound into your head and give you some great tracks to listen to. 'Noughts & Crosses' and 'Take Some Time' are two of their strongest tracks, and you can easily hear why I love the tracks, just go see them play live, well worth the trip!

Gig Review... Heavy Hearts @ The Cresset, Peterborough, 20th September 2011

One thing I do like about going to gigs is finding those young bands that have only just started out, and an added bonus is they already sound amazing. Heavy Hearts was one of those bands. Second on after a fairly Pop-Rock band that sounds like a You Me At Six support act they certainly blew be away regarding their sound!

I instantly thought - within the first 3 songs - that they sound like the perfect combination of a jazzy Foals and a bluesy Florence + The Machine! With such a soulful voice coming from their front-woman Rosie you would've thought that they have been playing live for a while, right? Nope, I found out after the gig from their guitarist (Josh) that this is their 7th ever gig. Amazing considering the whole band is so tight while playing their songs, what's more is that they played all of their own songs, something that I like from a new band. I'd keep an eye on these guys if I were you!

Track of the week... Trophy Wife - Capony Shade

The opening track from the brand new Trophy Wife five-track EP 'Bruxism'. Released on the 17th October via Blessing Force. With the 'Bruxism EP' Trophy Wife have taken an experimental approach by using a different producer for each track. They travelled to Berlin to work with acclaimed electronic artist/producer Ewan Pearson, then collaborated with Oxford acolytes Yannis from Foals and Andrew Halford.

With Trophy Wife finally releasing an EP - getting warmed up for the album - this song is going to be the first track on the 10" EP. It bounces all over the place with lots of great riffs, samples and drum sections. It does delve into the Dub-Step genre towards the latter half of the song, but that's fine, getting more of a demographic right? Correct, I can see this being remixed and ending up to be a proper club track. Trophy Wife have laid down such a solid foundation for the rest of the EP.

Introducing... Starlings

Starlings was started in a steel city studio in the spring of 2009 to provide a rhythmical release from the humdrum offerings of the daily grind. Jet set on their melodic mission, the boys spent their early days under the wonderful wing of ultra-psych producer Richard Norris (The Grid, Time & Space Machine, Beyond The Wizards Sleeve) blending Balearic beats (similar to Crystal Fighters) with cosmic synths to fashion toe-tapping shimmering disco sound.

Songs to listen to would be 'Weight In Gold' and the Starkey remix of the same song. They clearly display their musicianship and ability to write diverse dance songs with the good old guitar making some appearances in the songs. Synth laden Dance tunes for the masses, they are the sexiest songs to grace my ears in this genre for a while!

Single Review... The Cads - Club Of Rome

Who have gone from local shows to playing in Germany to playing 'The Lake' stage at Latitude Festival? The Cads have! Forming in September 2009 (originally as a four piece) they play Tropical music with a Indie twist to it. They have built their reputation on having brilliant songs, stunning performances and brilliant visuals as seen in their videos. Their latest endeavour is a brand new single 'Club Of Rome' backed with 'Blueprint' and (on the CD version only) 'Sunshine At 7' .

Club Of Rome:
From the start of the song it is a up-beat synthy Tropical song, perfect for the summer time! The guitars are so utterly joyous and the vocals are just perfect! This has came a long way from the rough demo I heard a few months ago and is progression from their last single 'Skin', but still keeps the fresh sound they have made for themselves. Even the video sees sun, grass and everyone being happy, a summer anthem, I think so!
Out of 10: 9/10

Blueprint:
This starts off their live performances and I can see why! It builds from a simple start of guitars and builds with a drum and then kicks into life. This is the best advert for the band and got my by the scruff of the neck from the word go. I can really see why the Germans and us Brits go mental for them after seeing them live, this track grabs you and gives you brilliant riffs and hooks! Not to mention the amazing performance the whole band delivers!
Out of 10: 9/10

Sunshine At 7:
A track written by the lead singer and guitarist of the band (Stef). A quote from the PR says "It captures the feelings of being transported from the quiet countryside of Suffolk to the big pollution of Bristol (where Stef now lives)". The simplicity of the track truly does get your attention as it unfolds before you. This really is a single release with the best B-Sides you can possibly ever hear!

Album Review... Is Tropical - Native To

BIG favourites with us on the blog, Is Tropical release one of the most anticipated début albums of the year. ‘Native to’, produced by the band together with Jimmy Robertson and part-Mixed by Lifelike, features twelve new tracks including the recent single ‘South Pacific’ and the forthcoming release ‘The Greeks’. Stylistically ranging from raw dream-pop anthems to late night dance bangers, standout tracks include crowd favourites, ‘Lies’ and ‘Think We’re Alone’.

South Pacific:
Is Tropical seem to be aiming to strike a very fine balance here, pitching themselves between dark, fuzzy lo-fi and easy-going pop. There are some fine moments though, such as the bass and that shows what Is Tropical are capable of. And from there, the song drifts into its final chorus, in which all the elements are in place. And from there, the song rolls into its final chorus, in which all the elements are so firmly in place, stunning is a word I'd describe it as
Out of 10: 8/10

Land Of The Nod:
A dark synth and sample pad starts the song off before going into some weird synth-pop sounding track. The track builds body further on into the track and picks that infectious bass-line. This is no 'South Pacific' but not a terrible track by a long shot, it's more of a shock to me because I was expecting a bit more of a dancy tune. Still, a good track none the less
Out of 10: 6/10

Lies:
Now this is what I was expecting, drum kicks, bass and a sick synth! They have it all going on in this track, and I am pretty sure this is one of the fan favourites their management was going on about to me. It really does have a rave feel to it, honestly it does! I can imagine myself listening to this on repeat. The end of the track has it all, the bass I am constantly going on about, the wobbling synth lines and the lyrical whispers of the singer!
Out of 10: 8/10

The Greeks:
The Greeks is a jaunty pop track, that would have been easily shelved as another unimaginative and predictable output by another same-ish London band had it not been for the synth stabs punctuating perfectly and saved by what sounds like a harp strummed in a peculiar way. I really do love the quick blasts ot guitar riffs dotted randomly in the song and the marching-esque drum beats.
Out of 10: 10/10

What?:
I have the demo for this song, and this is such an improvement! There is such a retro feel to this track and it sounds like a sample from a SNES computer game. Still, they pull off another stunner here with grooves you can dance to. They really do explore their sound a lot here with a lot of variations on the drumming, synths and even the sample pads. Everything stops for a while and you get this pulsating bass-line ripple right through you!
Out of 10: 8/10

Clouds:
Maybe the track nearest to the pop genre here, but that is slowly ebbed away into a song that is filled with keys of pulses, bass lines that will make you go mental and although this may seem like a simple track it is a nice change of pace, and is a welcome.
Out of 10: 7/10

Take My Chances:
This track explores more of the Indie-Rock side of their sound, but as the synths may suggest otherwise this is still a brilliant track layered with everything from keys, drum-pads, distorted vocals and a quiet guitar. They certainly took their chances with this song as once again it is a nice slow track from a band that I now really adore!
Out of 10: 7/10

Oranges:
Back to the Electronic madness they are mostly associated with, this track sounds like a contender for the next single to be released after 'The Greeks'. With an interesting drum beat and quiet guitars the synths prove to be king here. The nearer end of the track si by far the best as the guitar is going full blown with the riffs forcing their way through.
Out of 10: 8/10

Berlin:
One of my new favourite tracks, simply because of the riff at the minute mark, this track is oh so more than that. With the vocals establishing their ground on this track and the bass line on this track making it more prominent with every second going by.
Out of 10: 8/10

Think We're Alone:
Yes the guitar at the forefront of the track, this is what Bloc Party would sound like if they all done acid. Chunky bass-lines, fast (and ever so hard to play) drumming solos, glittering synth lines and the guitar riffs making this track bit by bit warm to me quicker than any of the other new tracks put together!
Out of 10: 8/10

Zombie:
You may think this might be a dark track given the title, and it does sound like it from the off, with sounds that sound like they have came from out of space, dark synths and even darker vocals. After only a minute the distorted guitar comes into the frame giving it such a likeability, and the trippy latter of the track just makes this track so sharp!
Out of 10: 9/10

Seasick Mutiny:
A B-Side to the single 'When O When' I didn't think this would make the album, but thankfully it did! With such a good album passing right before our ears it is only fitting to have a stunning closer. This Synth filled track is a perfect fitting to the end of the album. The big bass at the beginning of the track build up tension and then the guitar and keys follow with the echoing keys making this track have a dark edge to it. The end of the track embodies a snippet of every song on the album and creates an orgy of noise.
Out of 10: 9/10

Track of the week... Peace - Bblood

Relativity unknown to me until a couple of days ago, Peace is a young Indie-Rock band from the Midlands. They have such a great sound, imagine Tropical-Rock with a dash of Math-Pop, that is Peace. The track is entitled 'Bblood' (yes with two 'B's). You can also thank Will Crosby for leading me in the right direction for this weeks track.

The track starts off with a fade in of pure noise, then it gives way to astonishing guitars similar to the old sound of Foals, not that I am trying to compare but this is the easiest way for you guys to understand the sound. The vocals are so soulful, and the backing vocals give you goosebumps when listening to it, after the 'ooo' and 'ahhs' have gone they give way to the guitars again, and oh joy! This is really fun to listen to! You can really hear the bassist and drummer playing their hearts out on this track as it is so technical! I think you would have to be hard pressed not to like this. Seriously guys! WOW!

Album Preview: Is Tropical - Native To

Released on Kitsune/Co-Op on the 1th June 2011. Recent signings to the Kitsune label, Is Tropical are set to release their début album on the 13th of June 2011.

Formed in London, IS TROPICAL first came to international attention with the release of their debut single ‘When O’ When’/'Seasick Mutiny' on Hit Club Records in January 2010. Produced by Al Al Al (The Big Pink / Klaxons), the single, together with their spectral live shows, saw the band attract the attention of fans and critics alike. Dividing opinions on the band's refusal to show their faces as well as their broad, all-encompassing sound meant that Is Tropical were soon at the centre of a battle between lo-fi purists and those who cherished the strange electronic instrumentals the band have become known for. They soon signed to legendary French label Kitsuné (Digitalism/Two Door Cinema Club) and released their second single ‘South Pacific’ in November 2010.

Around this time Is Tropical toured the UK and Europe as special guests of Klaxons, The Big Pink and Mystery Jets and have subsequently grown into a stunning live act. Playing an introverted and blithely energetic set, and cloaked by self-made video projections, they improvise constantly changing soundscapes brilliantly combing a late night strobe club show with infectious, sing along pop songs.

Tour highlights:
April 22 – Printemps de Bourges, Bourges, FRANCE (w/ LOGO and HOUSSE DE RACKET)
April 24 – Kitsuné meets Ponystep Heaven, London, UK (with HOUSSE DE RACKET, LOGO, AEROPLANE, DELPHIC, PUNKS JUMP UP, GILDAS & ICONA POP)
April 30 – Studio Coast, Tokyo, JAPAN
June 17 – Release Party IS TROPICAL album, XOYO, London, UK
