Sounds of 2014 - #6 - Waylayers

Having worked their way steadily climbing up the billing of festivals in recent years, playing bigger venues and releasing their first proper EP - "Fault Lines" - the East London band Waylayers are on to something special after a very succesful 2013 which saw them enter the Billboard Top 100 chart in America.

It's no lie that we've been loving their work from the beginning, ever since we heard "Fires" and the first demo of "Magnets" we knew that they were on to something! After touring Europe too this year they've picked up some big fans along the way too, Steve Lamacq and Dermot O'Leary amongst the many. The year was rounded off by them doing over 20 festivals in one season racking up a massive 2000+ miles in the process.

The band have perfected their live show and studio material which now means they're in business to play with the big boys in 2014. Hopefully another EP will give them the push they really need to get the break, they've appeared on the legendary Kitsune Compilation already, the next step is getting an album out. Be sure to keep an eye out for exciting releases from them and live shows in the coming 365 days.

Track of the week... Waylayers - Magnets

Waylayers are back, and with a new version of 'Magnets' now doing the rounds they're setting their guns to stun! The band have been hiding away in their studio creating some amazing new songs, we we found out when they played our show a week ago.

'Magnets' is a track the band will always be associated with, it's exactly everything they're about. Danceable Electronic Rock that makes you want to get down and boogie to the beat. As I said back in 2011, "With a new era of Dance-Rock beckoning in 2012 Waylayers are going to be at the forefront of the revolution" - They're still up there and with 'Magnets' they'll be there for a long time!

Track of the year is ... New Ivory - A Knight

New Ivory have smashed their way to the top spot on our 'Track of the year' for 2011. They first caught our eyes way back in early June, here is the original post.

They won with 345 votes out of the 1045 cast. A close second place is the best performing international act for the second year running, and third was a close battle between two bands that are very close to each others hearts, Safari and VOWS.

Here is a run down of the top 5:
2nd - In Golden Tears - Urban Emotions
3rd - Safari - So I See
4th - VOWS - Colours
5th - Films Of Colour - Actions

The rest (in no particular order)
The Spires - Fireworks
Is Tropical - South Pacific
Peace - Bblood
Rapids! - Littleblood
Waylayers - Hear No Lies
I Heart Sharks - Neuzeit
Hey Sholay - Wishbone

This has been a fantastic year for me and all of my contributors.

We all wish you a very happy new year and have a great 2012, I know I will.

Track of the week... Waylayers - Hear No Lies

Fusing elements of Electronica and Indie-Rock with epic and melodious vocal lines and stunning hooks. They instantaneously caught the attention of the legendary Steve Lamacq who has already touted them as ‘unsigned band of the week’ on his 6music show.

No track sums up Waylayers’ huge ability more than début single ‘Hear No Lies’; its haunting, layered synths and driving melody make it a reflective and powerful statement of intent for a band who look set to do big things fast. Considering this is their début single they seem to be really great at projecting their musical abilities. With a new era of Dance-Rock beckoning in 2012 Waylayers are going to be at the forefront of the revolution judging by this track.

Single Review... Waylayers - Hear No Lies

Formed in mid-2010, London-based trio Waylayers immediately set about crafting stunning atmospheric pop, fusing elements of Electronica and Indie-Rock with epic and melodious vocal lines and stunning hooks. They instantaneously caught the attention of the legendary Steve Lamacq who has already touted them as ‘unsigned band of the week’ on his 6music show. This buzz led them to the door of producer Ewan Pearson (Delphic) who straight away saw the band’s ability to create songs shot through with an effortless pop-nous.

Fires:
The stunning B-Side to 'Hear No Lies' was originally featured on the world famous Kitsune album, specifically Kitsune Maison 10: The Fireworks Issue. This racey Indie-Dance track has great synths picking away at the riffs and very very fast drumming. This is one of those tracks of the Kitsune album that I always play. Why? Because it's so good!
