Album Review... Dog Is Dead - All Our Favourite Stories

I first heard Dog Is Dead two years ago driving at 2am on Radio1, I was amazed that something this good had gone unnoticed by almost everyone I knew. I eventually unearthed a few singles and B-sides floating around on Youtube and Soundcloud, since then I have eagerly waited for a full studio album, and now it’s here it doesn’t disappoint.

The first track of the album ‘Get Low’ sets the tone; dark but dancing, it’s what the Maccabees and Friendly fires supergroup would sound like. Its melodic guitars and stab beat drums are backed by haunting vocals which are used throughout the record.

The next track ‘Do the right thing’ brings into focus how the band use so many influences. At first we hear a single guitar looping when a strokes-ie chorus hits and instantly makes you fall in love with the way Dog is Dead present themselves and their music. The lyrics also go with the themes of the album about choices and consequences, which are referenced in later tracks such as the bands Single ‘Two Devils’ which is one of my favourite highlights of the record. ‘Two devils’ is one of those songs you can’t stop listening too, and when you do, your humming it constantly to the annoyance of many of your friends (who you’ve linked the track too countless times) it’s something you want to share with people because it is THAT good. It’s a real crowd pleaser, its use of bass and drums lets the guitars have free roam over the track which in turn complement the vocals.

Another highlight is ‘Talk through the night’ a worthy contender of best song on the record. It’s simple yet catchy mix of guitar lines and punching drums makes you stamp your feet or clap your hands or anything in appreciation of this great song writing. If I could only listen to one song for the rest of the year it would be this song. Also one thing to note is the music video (on Dog is Dead’s Channel linked below) which shows that not every band that deal with dark themes has to be grunge rock glaring down the camera screaming and smashing up everything in sight. It adds comedy and wit to this already diverse band.

The rest of the record is just as brilliant as the aforementioned tracks, this too me is one (if not the best) albums of the year. It was a risk for Dog is Dead to release an album, I thought they might push a few more Eps and singles before this to add to their growing fan base. But it has already paid off making it into the top 10 in pre-sale chats. Therefore this record is a full and strong debut album which I would recommend anyone to go out and buy straight away.
