Gig Review... Lucy Rose @ Oxjam 2012

This is the third night of Oxjam’s 2012 instores at Dalston’s Oxfam store, a series of gigs to promote October’s Oxjam festival.

The tiny shop works fairly well as a makeshift gig venue, with a substantial stage and sound system, surprising considering that it will be open for business only the next day. Support for Lucy Rose comes from Kyla La Grange. The songs look for a kind of atmospheric, stadium-sized pop-rock, but seem a little over the top and over-produced.

The act most are waiting for, including Bombay Bicycle Club’s Suren de Saram, is indie-folk songstress Lucy Rose. Although her roots lie very firmly in folk, Lucy Rose’s set tonight sounds more along the lines of the band she’s toured with for the last few months. With bursts of indie guitar and hip-hop beats, songs like ‘Middle Of The Bed’ sound slick live. With her new album ‘Like I Used To’ on the verge on release she plays most of the album and it’s a good set that goes down well with the crowd.

Even though she is not a totally unique artist sonically (think Joni Mitchell, Laura Marling) she has a knack for good songwriting and her set is polished and, very good.
