Gig Review... Lucy Rose @ The Scholar’s Bar, Leicester, 8th November 2012

The tiny Scholar’s Bar in Leicester is usually home to hip hop DJs packing punches with big beats; but not tonight, as the newly altered stage is instead packed with an array of acoustic guitars, stools and an old milk crate amongst other things.

Pete Roe begins proceedings with his heart warming and soothing blend tales of love, life and loss. Equipped only with his guitar and two drum pedals, it’s the minimalism that enhances every individual strike of a string. Roe is an excellent technical guitarist, adding rhythmic yet subtle backings to tracks like ‘Oh Susanna’ and ‘Some Kind Of Mystery In The Air’. There’s something mesmerising about Pete that seems hard to point out exactly, but with an album out early next year hopefully it won’t feel like too long until more people can witness such a simple but powerful set.
Lucy Rose first started out singing backing vocals for Bombay Bicycle Club and even joined them onstage at this year’s Reading Festival. But her success as a solo artist is testament to her sensational song writing ability allowing her to put the attitude into the acoustic scene. The rapturous applause that welcomes her and her band to the stage clearly moves the singer as it does throughout her set; even bringing a few tears of joy, as the 200 capacity crowd softly sing along to every track word perfect.

Tonight’s set is drawn from debut album ‘Like I Used To’ with a few added gems from the newly released extended edition. The more aggressively backed tracks like ‘Red Face’ and ‘Bikes’ are met with the same glowing appreciation as some of the records tenderest moments such as ‘Shiver’.
‘Night Bus’ is a personal favourite of many; mine included, and Rose ups the emotional ante even in a live setting, making more than a few audience members wipe away tears from their eyes. This attachment people have to her songs is what makes Rose more than just another singer-songwriter, there’s a real sense that everyone in the room is somehow in tune with every thought Lucy Rose is singing in their direction.

A new as yet un-named song is given its debut airing tonight; a potential danger for some, but the crowd remain held and lost in Rose’s eyes as she pours her heart and soul into giving one the best performances of her life. Omitting fan favourite ‘Gamble’ is exactly that, but with between song chat as brilliantly witty as Rose’s, all is forgiven the moment she returns to the stage to pick up her guitar and launch straight into the encore.

With an angelic voice and a stellar personality, it’s unbelievable to think that more people have yet to hear such beauty. There’s no doubt that the only way for Lucy Rose is up into the stratosphere. If the songs weren’t enough, she even makes tea and jam to sell after shows if you’re feeling peckish or thirsty. Rose’s down to earth personality is magnetic and will no doubt aid her as she politely swipes the spot of queen of acoustic loveliness from Laura Marling.
