So far Wolf Alice have earned themselves the attention of some of the internet’s most prolific music bloggers. While this is all well and good, I can’t help but be slightly sceptical over the lack of noise they seem to have been making. But then again, some of the best bands in the world don’t always break as instantly as people would like.
Signed to Rough Trade, Londoner Ellie Rowsell may have named latest single ‘Fluffy’ but there’s no hiding the angst present in the shredding Yuck-like guitar lines and the slight early punk elements to her voice. Which begs the question in my mind; how has she garnered comparisons to The xx and Jessie Ware? Whilst not smack round the face obvious, there are similarities buried deep within Rowsell’s production methods and occasional lean into a more soulfully R&B direction.
‘Fluffy’ may give people the indication that Wolf Alice is all about empty headed love songs with crooning about heart ache and woe, but look past your first impressions and enter the ever so slightly psychedelic and fiery world and you shall be far from disappointed.
The name Wolf Alice might not inspire great feelings of love and loyalty in your heart right now, but give it time and this release a few listens and you shall be well on your way there. With a host of likely festival appearances, Ellie Rowsell’s star is on the rise and if you do anything this summer it should be watching her in a tent in some unknown field.
