I was first introduced to the Natterjacks a few weeks ago by a friend and it is only as I sit here, on my Mac, writing this introductory piece that I have got around to listening to them. Not a great start. I have to confess. However for the last 1, 1 and a half, wait...2 hours I have found myself stomping my feet to the rhythmic beat of their kick drum as I listen to their yet to be released EP 'In The Bark'. The Chesterfield based two piece are comprised of members and old school friends Freddie Bingham and Mark Evans, since their emergence in the Winter of 2010 their Autumnal indie folk sound has developed some what, becoming brighter and bolder crammed with meaningful lyrics that take you on a different journey every time you listen to them.
Ok so it seems that I have joined the Natterjack party late, in August 2013 the band released their debut album 'Highlands' off the back of a busy year writing and gigging both locally and across the country. Now I don't like to make comparisons however the record resonates with influences from Mumford and Sons, Laura Marling and Ben Howard creating a beautifully rich and full sound. Stand out tracks include 'Red Skies' and 'Dark Days' both of which have received plays on Amazing Radio and BBC Introducing. I must say that the debut album from the Derbyshire duo is definitely worth listening to...it's great, however in my opinion it merely sets the scene for what is to come. On September 15th their follow up EP 'Into the Bark' is being released and after having the opportunity to listen to it for the past. Wait. 3 hours...I can honestly say that it is well worth the wait, the EP itself has shown what a year of touring can do resulting in a sound that is not only ready for venues up and down the country but ready for the festival circuit too.
