MGMT and Mac DeMarco are apparently collaborating!

MGMT and Mac DeMarco are apparently collaborating, well according to reports on other music sites at least. A photo shows them in a home-studio jamming away on something, and if you're eagle eyed you'll spot the same wallpaper on the walls in both the video MGMT posted recently and the very image that's sparked this frenzy!

Head on down to check out the content!

Before They Were Big - MGMT

The past year saw the release of MGMT's third album. Their self-titled psychedelic masterpiece followed major chart success “Oracular Spectacular” and their trippy follow up “Congratulations”. MGMT had wanted Congratulations to be available for free, however their record label intervened.

Unknown to most though, Andrew VanWyngarden and Benjamin Goldwasser had already recorded an album together under the name “The Management”. The album “Climbing To New Lows” was a demo album and wasn't meant to be released, but somehow was leaked online in 2005. The album contains a number of songs which could have come straight out of any 90's video game. This and a sound that is sometimes close to indistinguishable from Kraftwerk (listen to “Greyhoundredux” led to a very young, fresh and heavily electronic sounding album. It is impossible to buy this album – both in digital as in physical form- as it hasn't officially been released since.

The VanWyngarden – Goldwasser duo started making music together in 2002 whilst studying experimental music at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Goldwasser's original plan had been to move to California and become a farmer. However he let go of this idea after MGMT's (The Management changed their name in 2004) “Time To Pretend EP” and the following tour led to the band's acknowledged appearance on the musical map of the USA. Recent live performances have included “Indie Rokkers”, which dates back to this 2005 EP.

MGMT's first version of their biggest hit "Kids" dates back to their 2004 EP "We (Don't) Care". You will find (nearly) all of MGMT's previous work on Youtube. Enjoy finding hidden treasure! Some of it is below - enjoy!

MGMT reveal video for "Alien Days"

The song we first heard around late April now has an official video to accompany it, it's taken from their latest album - "MGMT".

It's a strange one to watch, but still ... it's worth a listen!

Gig Review... Guards & MGMT @ Kesselhaus, Munich, 5th October 2013

Take an old factory hall with a spooky atmosphere and two of the most interesting bands on the planet and you should have a good evening.
And anyone visiting Munich's Kesselhaus with high expectations can't have been disappointed.
Guards kicked off the evening playing a short, but exciting set to a crowd who unfortunately either didn't know or wasn't really into the American band. Nonetheless their set was incredible. It had an instant feel-good factor to it and, packed with energy and positive vibes, the trio from New York made up for the disappointing acoustics, due to which few vocals were actually heard.

And then, of course, came the headliner for the evening. MGMT.
"I don't know how to begin", frontman Andrew VanWyngarden sings during the song "Weekend Wars".
And neither do I, such was the amount of creative mastermind thrown at the crowd by MGMT. Combining songs from all of their albums and even their best known song "Kids" (not usually performed live by MGMT anymore) with a visual show, which you can't help thinking Albert Hofmann played a part in, led to one of the trippiest concerts in recent years. Throughout the 90 or so minutes the band were backed by a constant stream of films showing something resembling a stereotypical LSD trip mixed with sweets flying through the sky, before finding their way though clouds into an ancient looking temple complex. No joke.
"Pictures on a screen [...]. Hey people, what does it mean?"
Picking highlights from an evening that is itself one massive highlight is difficult. But frontman Andrew VanWyngarden walking out on stage in his "Lederhosen", whilst drinking traditional Munich beer (the "Oktoberfest" ends this weekend in Munich) certainly endeared him to the fans.
Their first song "Time To Pretend" got the crowd going straight away and gave the venue a trance-like atmosphere which carried on through songs from all three albums right until their encore "Plenty Of Girls In The Sea".
One lucky girl was pulled onstage during a song from their new album "Your Life Is A Lie" to play the giant cowbell placed onstage, with the words "BE AWARE" written on it.

Throughout the whole concert I couldn't help thinking that this is a band now actually exploring that long-elusive dark side of the moon.
Luckily, even though the crowd danced until their hearts exploded, the place did not ignite.

Album Review... MGMT - MGMT

Describing MGMT's new self-titled album as a psychedelic masterpiece would be fitting. But two words cannot even start to describe this complex and trippy album. The songs on the album really giving the impression that a wave runs through each song connecting it to the next, makes it easy to forget where one song starts and the next ends since the colourful wave runs on.

Combining quiet, thoughtful songs such as "I Love You Too, Death" with happy, powerful songs like "Alien Days" and even a song sounding like a spaceship taking off ("A Good Sadness") makes listening to the album a voyage through different spheres of MGMT's sound.

The song "Plenty Of Girls In The Sea" will no doubt be a big sing-along during the chorus at the US band's live shows. This may also be down to this song sounding like what I imagine the Beatles would have sounded like had they been tripping out on acid with modern technology around them.
Although with many different layers to discover and each listening experience providing new elements to each piece, the album lacks the sort of song that sticks in one's mind and opens up the treasure that is MGMT's music to listeners from other genres. This obviously isn't bad, but shows that MGMT have moved on from electro-pop hits from their first album "Oracular Spectacular". The new album also sounds a lot securer than their second album "Congratulations", with the band stating that they felt more at ease when recording the new album.

This album isn't in any way about individual songs, though. You get the feeling that with "Oracular Spectacular" you could just pull out your iPod and press play for any song. This album requires you to get your record player and listen to the album from start to finish - just as Andrew and Benjamin would have wanted you to. In hindsight "psychedelic masterpiece" is probably an understatement.
