[LISTEN] Stornoway - The Only Way Is Up (Yazz Cover)

Today Stornoway have announced the release of their brand new EP - "Boxnie Unplucked" - which compromises of acoustic versions of tracks that featured on their latest album "Bonxie" as well as a cover of Yazz's 1988 hit "The Only Way Is Up".

As the band extolled on one of their first ever releases "The Battery Human", we need to unplug and "Fix our loose connection out in the natural world wide web".

Stornoway reveal video for "Get Low"

Inspired by David Attenborough’s footage of 'imprinted' Greylag geese, flying low along side the broadcaster and naturalist, the video for "Get Low" features the same geese this time flying along side the band. This is not CGI or a visual effect.

The track is taken from their new album - "BONXIE" - which is out April 13th via Cooking Vinyl.

Stornoway announce Mini-LP release

Stornoway have announced a Mini-LP release entitled 'You Don't Know Anything' due for release on the 11th November. The Mini-LP will feature 6 new songs as well as forthcoming single 'Farewell Appalachia' which originally featured on the band's last album "Tales From Terra Firma".

Album Review... Stornoway - Tales From Terra Firma

Oxford's Stornoway had, until rather recently, never visited the town on a remote Scottish island after which their band is named. Since they formed they've had a whole radio show dedicated to them, played Glastonbury's Pyramid stage and released a successful début in 'Beachcomber's Windowsill'.

2013 sees them release the follow-up, and the album opens with the joyous 'You Take Me As I Am', with it's refain 'If I were to die today/ then it wasn't all a waste', layers of brass and strange sounds coming together to create this brilliant song. Any preconceptions of comparisons with the awful Mumford & Sons can be discarded with this track, the music stands closer to the cult nu-folk bands Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and Neutral Milk Hotel.

The slower, more acoustic-orientated 'Farewell Appalachia' and the slightly over-chirpy 'The Bigger Picture' follow before '(A Belated) Invite To Eternity' one of the other stand-outs of the album, where again there show their more adventurous, sonically lush and even post-rock influenced side.

The album is a bit of a mixed bag. At one end of the scale are the magnificent more adventurous tracks like 'Knock Me On The Head' and the others I mentioned, but some of the acoustic tracks appear much more tepid. Overall, it's a good effort but I can't help but think this album could have been much, much better.

Stornoway to release 'Tales From Terra Firma' in 2013

The Oxford band will release 'Tales From Terra Firma' early 2013 and will support its release with live dates in February and March. The Oxford band will follow-up 2010's debut full-length 'Beachcomber’s Windowsill' with 'Tales From Terra Firma' on 11th March next year.
