Gig Review... Futures @ Arts Centre, Norwich, 7th July 2012
This was the third night of the Futures ‘Karma tour’ which was meant to take place earlier this year in April but after being dropped from their label, the band had to postpone the tour to July this year, and it was definitely worth the wait as they pulled of the show with execution and style.
After a long wait, whilst the tiring audience went out to catch some air, the band came on and started with ‘Start a Fire’, arguably the bands largest song, which was able to get the crowd (of which many were still entering the room from their break) in good spirit. They then performed ‘Get Out’, another popular song with what seemed like a small audience for a sold out gig. The next song ‘Island in the Sea’ was a real crowd pleaser, as many a head bobbed, the intimate audience created a good atmosphere. However, supposedly displeased with the audience enjoyment thus far, Futures lead singer Ant West got them heavily involved in the next song ‘Say My Name’, getting them to sing along to the chorus, which really put the crowd in good spirit. The show continued with songs such as ‘Indigo’ and ‘Aeroplanes’, off their latest album ‘The Karma Album’ which was released in May this year. They then played ‘Karma Satellite’, another easy sing-along song, which the crowd really enjoyed, singing and shuffling in time to the song. They then played ‘Today We Had Love’, and ‘Million Lights’, both well received by the audience, who all seemed to know the lyrics to most of the songs.
The 4 piece band from Buckinghamshire then went on to play 2 of their older songs; ‘Thank You’ and ‘Swim Teams’, which the more long-standing fans really enjoyed, whilst the more new-found fans jiggled accordingly to more unheard of material. They added an interesting twist to the end of ‘Swim Teams’, rounding it off with the chorus of Lana Del Rey’s ‘Video Games’, which some members of the audience were also familiar enough with to sing along, although there were some puzzled faces. The band then went on to play ‘Sal Paradise’, another song from their older mini album ‘The Holiday’, which even the more amateur fans knew all too well, as the whole crowd sang loudly to the delight of the band who seemed to really be enjoying themselves. The band finished off their set without performing an encore, despite “ONE MORE SONG” chants from the small audience after they played their final song ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’, which was a great way to end a very pleasing set, as the audience used the last of their fading voices to sing along to the shouty chorus, and the band went off to a great reception to the crowd, who seemed to really enjoy the show, despite numerous members of the audience having left after Don Broco performed.
Overall it was a very good gig, with a great energetic atmosphere and cheerful audience. The highly anticipated bands had definitely lived up to expectations, especially the second act; Don Broco; who almost seemed to out-do Futures, and it would have seemed that many members of the audience were there primarily to see them.

Album Review.... Futures - The Karma Album
After a long time waiting Futures have finally released their first full length début album, after two years since 'The Holiday' they've perfected their live shows, been briefly signed to Mercury records and then left. This is more of a celebration to their integrity and for the their fans. But was 'The Karma Album' worth the wait?
'Start A Fire', 'Islands In The Sea' and 'Karma Satellite' started off the album in tremendous form, with quick fast paced guitar work and choruses to sing to your hearts content! Yet 'Get Out' doesn't seem to go the same way as the tracks before it, but towards the end the song picks up and gives you a rush of guitars and a funky bass line. 'Indigo' is a slow jam just like 'Million Lights', the latter seems to take some lyrics from Morning Parade's song 'Carousel', just listen, it might be a a coincidence but still, it takes a bit off the track for me.
'Say My Name' as been around the internet as a demo for the past year and after getting very attached to it I was pleasantly surprised that the full version of the song is just as poignant as the demo. The band also thought it a good idea to re-do 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf', this wasn't as good as I thought it could be, but it does boast a better mix of the song in general.
The album could've been a bit more daring as it could've been considering they're releasing it on their own, but after a year of not knowing weather they'll ever release the album to finally doing so it's not entirely worth the wait but it's a good record to listen to.

This was the week when Futures left their label, and after that they went and released a new single straight after the initial announcement. This is a pure acoustic master-class from the band and gives us a slight taste of what the impending album will sound like. You can pick up the digital single from bandcamp for 50p!
Slate The Disco: Yuck – Chew
Yuck are back and back with something very special. This week the moody four-piece posted a new track online, and it is arguably one of their finer tunes to date. 'Chew' is full with the same brand of shoegazey-grunge that made their debut self-titled album last year so popular.

Bastille completely won us over when we saw them live, and after I got back I stumbled upon this amazing cover of City High’s 2001 smash hit. Bastille put their own electronic spin on a Hip-Hop/RnB classic. Dan’s vocals just win you over from the off and the sheer consistency of the cover hold up throughout, you can pick up the ‘Other People's Heartache’ EP for FREE from their website

Optimistic shoegazers and trailblazers of the blooming Cambridge slacker rock scene are currently steadying their new EP for our ears. But in anticipation they this week dropped ‘The Great Greens’ as a taster. It’s full of a lo-fi haze that makes it a truly dynamite piece of grunge-pop. You can even claim this piece of sonic surf-rock for free, which we recommend you do.

Futures leaves Mercury / The full story

Hello friends!
Today was a big day for us, involving a decision that was hard to make, but we feel is the best one for our band.
I'm writing you this blog as we have some good/less good news to share with you. We have been restricted over the past 2 years as to how much music we have been able to share with you. This has been one of the most frustrating parts about being signed to a major record label, no longer being in control of releases. We recorded our album 1 year ago and it is yet to surface so we decided to take the matter into our own hands. We wrote 56 songs for our album and you guys have only had access to 2 of them, we've wanted to give you more but it's been an impossibility. Today we decided to leave Mercury Records, and the team there were kind and understanding enough to let us take our album with us. It's been an exciting time being signed, and we've had some amazing opportunities thanks to Mercury, for without them we would never have been able to visit the studios we did and have our record produced by Gil Norton.
So, here's the good news - We will be releasing our long awaited début album in June 2012.
And here's the less good news...If anything I love this band more now that they care about music and fans rather than JUST the money.
We booked our April tour way back at the start of the year, as we were on the understanding that our album would be out on the 16th April. So, with this in mind, we put the dates on sale trusting that you could all hear the album before we hit the road and experience the songs live. But as we all know, this isn't how it's panned out.
We've been weighing up over the past few days whether to postpone the album tour to tie in with the album and actually play new songs to you. The songs that we hoped would be in your ears before the tour. Although we love going on the road no matter where we end up, we can't justify playing another set full of the songs from The Holiday. There's only a certain amount of time that you can play the same 7 songs, without us or you thinking, 'Can we hear something else?' We appreciate that you have bought tickets and been so so patient with us over the past year. It's been the most frustrating few months of our lives, having to hold off the music that we created in 2011 and the wait has been killing us. We came to the decision that the tour will be postponed with exams in mind, as there's nothing worse than not being able to go gigs when you're mind is meant to be studying.
There are big changes coming our way, and we promise new music coming to you. Music that's been waiting for you. Just to clarify that the tour is still happening, and that all tickets will be valid. We promise that you will have a copy of our album before you're queuing up outside for the gigs. Scouts honour. We always hear that our music is experienced best with a dose of sunshine, and now it will be.
You're the best, and stick with us, because we're back. We're on our own terms and it never felt so good.

Gig Review... Futures @ The Forum, Tunbridge Wells, 7th December 2011
On a cold December evening battling with the remains of man flu, two friends and I wander into the Tunbridge Wells forum to be greeted by floods of pre-adolescents waiting for the final support to finish and the draw dropping Futures to arrive on stage. Apart from the sense that I am one of the oldest people in the room I can feel that cameras are about to go off and people are going to start dancing.
Futures started off their astounding set with their latest single 'Start a Fire'. With alternating guitars and all four members joining in to provide harmonised vocals, the single is one to watch out for. Apart from the natural energy that Futures brought with them, they also managed to captivate a crowd of devoted fans hang on every syllable that was sung.

At this point the only thing that I wanted more of was the crowd of fresh faced teens to be moving, just a little? However my attention was reverted back as Futures stepped into 'Sal Paradise' a song which mixes pop verses with a hint of pop punk in between. The song again showed many influences of the band and also let lead singer Ant West showcase an impressive vocal range which lead the band into the title track of the début album 'The Holiday'. At this point the shouts and camera flashes echoed around the room with all eyes trained upon the stage eagerly awaiting the bands response to their efforts of singing along to Futures set so far. To which they respond "What day is it? Wednesday? Wednesday!...Is everyone having a good Wednesday?" the crowd reacts with warmth and comic chorus in their response. Before Futures play their final track 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf' they leave the crowd waiting whilst sipping what looks suspiciously like peppermint tea. This in turn enabled enough time for crowd to muster what strength they had left for last song from the Buckinghamshire based band to play. The last song highlights what's best about Futures, that fact they have managed to merge both pop and punk to form a perfect balance which attracts such a wide audience. It's an odd sight, seeing a band of this stature playing a relatively small venue in comparison to the earlier dates of the bands UK wide tour. Overall Futures delivered a blistering set in which the underrated band set an extremely high standard for others to reach. I’m personally excited to see what will come next.

Gig Review... Futures @ Chinnerys, Southend, 9th December 2011
After following this band for a long time, I finally got round to see them play The Haymakers in Cambridge earlier this year. This tour was different though, they chose to play places they've not been before (as a band). And today it was the turn of the famous Chinnerys in Southend-On-Sea. As per the usual Futures asked their fans to suggest some opening acts for the gig, the first band was good, had some cracking riffs, but the vocals seemed too familiar, good all round. But I didn't get their demo CD, which is a shame because I'm sure they'd sound better on CD. The second band sounded way too commercialised to even dare mention them on this blog.
The turn out wasn't as I expected, around 150 people were in attendance, but then again this was the 'Far Reaches Tour', playing places they most likely will not play again (as I suspect they'll be bigger next year). They played an energetic mix of songs opening with their latest endeavour 'Start A Fire', the energy in the crowd spurred on the band and they performed in typical fashion... amazingly tight and without fault. They played 5 out of the 7 tracks off their 'Mini-Album' with the additions of new tracks 'Say My Name' and 'Start A Fire'. The track I most enjoyed out of the set was 'Island In The Sea', I've got the demo and the new version but the live performance always blows me away. Futures will be building on their success and I wouldn't be surprised if they have a top 10 album next year. Also, a brand new track is available to stream below, it's the B-Side off their last single, it's called 'Speed Of Light'

They played an energetic mix of songs opening with their latest endeavour 'Start A Fire', the energy in the crowd spurred on the band and they performed in typical fashion... amazingly tight and without fault. They played 5 out of the 7 tracks off their 'Mini-Album' with the additions of new tracks 'Say My Name' and 'Start A Fire'. Single Review... Futures - Start A Fire
Futures are back with their first single off the new album, most of their fans would consider this their 3rd single, but under the label they're on at the moment this is their first official release. The first being the free release of 'Islands In The Sea' which we loved! This time round it's a package of 3 songs, 'Start A Fire', 'Speed Of Light' and an acoustic version of the title track.
Start A Fire:
It starts off with a Stereophonics sounding clunky guitar then gives way to a powerful guitar. Ants vocals then caresses the song with the pulsing bass in the background helping you love this track even more than you should. The chorus finally comes after 100 seconds of waiting. This is certainly a brilliant effort by the lads and it's nice to see putting off their UK tour paid dividends here, the production is astonishing!
Out of 10: 8/10
Speed Of Light:
The B-Side of the single, and to be honest, this can easily be a single all by itself. The opening drum beats sound a bit like the opening to 'Lamplight' by Bombay Bicycle Club, honestly! But then it gives way to a more Pop-Rock anthem rather than an Indie classic, but then when the chorus comes in you are thrown right back to the anthem billing. If this song doesn't make the album I would be very disappointed, but none the less it's a great song!
Out of 10: 8.5/10

I'm not a fan of bands releasing acoustic versions of songs on the same release as the full blown studio version. But Futures do a great job on making this feel like a completely different song, the original for listening on the road with the volume whacked up and this version for those lazy Sunday afternoons.

Single Review... Futures - Island In The Sea
Futures have been one of those bands I first found out about when I started the blog (amongst others), and it's really really great to see them grow and grow into something that I know will be big int he future. I've even got their début self released album signed and it has been one of the most played albums in my music library of 2011. What's more is that they've just given away a FREE track, 'Islands In The Sea', which, until now, I've been listening to a rough demo version of it with static everywhere.
Island In The Sea:
As I've said before, a great huge step forwards for the band, a big move forwards from their initial studio work. The guitars from the off are ear catching with riffs associated by the big hitters in the 'Indie-Rock' genre, vocals are supplied by Ant West (as per the usual) and he sounds just as good as he ever has done, combine that all with amazing throbbing bass and the amazing drumming skills provided by the usual faces. This (once again) is a great song, and one that I hope will be on their début 'signed' album, 2012 will be big for them! I know it!

As I've said before, a great huge step forwards for the band, a big move forwards from their initial studio work. The guitars from the off are ear catching with riffs associated by the big hitters in the 'Indie-Rock' genre, vocals are supplied by Ant West (as per the usual) and he sounds just as good as he ever has done, combine that all with amazing throbbing bass and the amazing drumming skills provided by the usual faces. This (once again) is a great song, and one that I hope will be on their début 'signed' album, 2012 will be big for them! I know it!
