Album Review... Superfood - Don't Say That

Back in May (2014) Superfood set out on a mammoth of a UK tour supporting Wolf Alice. Needless to say, we were excited for that tour. We were excited to hear Superfood’s unique and funk sounding tunes live and of course they delivered a very polished set but since then we have been even more excited about their debut album ‘Don’t Say That’ which comes out November 3rd. I have had the pleasure of listening to the band’s forth coming release and here is what I think.

Opening with ‘Lily For Your Pad To Rest On’  you get exactly what I mean when I describe the band as funk. A quirky and bouncy song starts off the 13 track LP that includes ‘TV’ and ‘Melting’ from ‘MAM’ EP and singles ‘Mood Bomb’ and ‘Right On Satellite’.

In recent years it has been very clear that bands in the indie scene have been battling it out to sound individual and to get out of the indie niche. Superfood have done exactly that. There is nothing in the album that is generic. A new wave in the scene is just round the corner and Superfood are leading it. With feel good songs such as ‘You Can Believe’ and more edgy rock tracks that are crying for a mosh pit like ‘Superfood’ the album is a perfect recipe for success.

‘Don’t Say That’ closes with three sing-a-long anthems that could shake any tiny club or any arena sized venue. I suspect it will be the latter. There are big things coming for Superfood so when this album comes out in November, do not sleep on it! It’s one of the best albums to be released this year.

You can catch them on tour this October/November. See dates here.

The Weekly Catch-Up (w/e 20th September)

Here it is, the best music that we've blogged about over the past week, we have had some seriously brilliant tunes, but we want to keep it short this week, so pardon it, but please do look at our 'Soundcloud Picks' if you're still in need for new music!

Ben Howard

Ben Howard - Conrad

After touring his stunning début album all over the world, we see him on the brink of releasing his long-awaited follow-up to "Every Kingdom", and now you can check out a brand new song "Conrad". It continues forwards the dark and melodic themes that he begun on his most recent major release "Burgh Island EP" and comeback track "End Of The Affair", you can listen to the track below.

Catfish and the Bottlemen - I Will Never Let You Down

Catfish and the Bottlemen's new album is out now, we've given it a huge push on the site and after you buy it you'll know why. So in support of that the band have popped into BBC Radio 1 to perform a special cover for their 'Live Lounge' segment. You can check out the rocky version of "I Will Never Let You Down", with a brief cover of Modjo's "Lady (Here Me Tonight)", something for the 90's kids here, and something for the 00's lot too, this is seriously fun to listen to!

Hozier - Do I Wanna Know?

Hozier has popped into the BBC's Live Lounge for a very relaxed and delicate cover of Arctic Monkeys' "Do I Wanna Know?" as apart of the radio station's 'more music month'. He also plays a sold out London KOKO on 17th September - scroll on down to check the cover out!

Y.O.U - Heavy Crown (The 1975 Remix)

It looks like the band do not want to be forgotten, with loads of remixes done by them in the past two or so months they're certainly keeping themselves busy! Both artists reside in Manchester and this is a testament to the scene that collaborations are so fruitful, this remix is just brilliant!

Superfood - Mood Bomb

Superfood have unveiled a new song to come off their forthcoming début album "Don't Say That", "Mood Bomb" is once again an upbeat future classic from Birmingham's up and coming quartet.

James Bay - Forever

James Bay has been performing a cover of Haim's "Forever" on BBC Radio One's Live Lounge! See full performance just below! Earlier today James stopped by BBC Radio One’s Live Lounge and performed a cover of Haim’s “Forever”.

Darlia - Stars Are Aligned

We're big fans of Darlia and after getting its first play last night on Radio 1 as Zane Lowe's 'Hottest Record In The World, the Blackpool trio are all set to release the crushing new single on October 27th via B-Unique Records. "Stars Are Aligned" continues along the same lines of their other music, massive choruses, big guitar and brilliant drums with smooth bass. It's a radio friendly rock track for the modern ages, crank this up and enjoy!

The Weekly Catch-Up (w/e 6th September)

So here we are, again. The past 7 days has been one of the best since I've started this site, no kidding either! We've got a smorgasbord of the best new music, from The Neighbourhood to Interpol, and everything inbetween!

Interpol

The Neighbourhood - H8M4CH1N3

The Neighbourhood unveil new track"H8M4CH1N3" - or "Hate Machine" if you can see past the 90's texting words. The song has been taken from the forthcoming release "#000000 & #FFFFFF" - which is out soon, but you can already download some new material here.

Saint Raymond - Luna

Saint Raymond's cover of "Luna", originally by Bombay Bicycle Club, was recorded in session for Phil Taggart from Maida Vale on 28th of August 2014, and now the new star of upbeat Indie music has uploaded it, check it out below!

Kleerup - Let Me In (feat Susanne Sundfør)

Kleerup, the multi award winning and celebrated Swedish producer today unveils a brand new single and two mini albums. First single "Let Me In" is a bonafide disco inspired Abba-esque stomper featuring Susanne Sundfør (M83, Bjork and Röyksopp) and perfectly sets the tone for his remarkable forthcoming mini album "As If We Never Won" coming October 13th through Warner Music.

The Neighbourhood - Warm

Following the drop of his self-released début "Indigo Child", Raury has teamed up with established rockers The Neighbourhood for a slow-burning collaboration. You can check out the latest track from the band's 'Mixtape Album' below, it's so far shaping up to be a brilliant LP!

COMPNY - Something Had To Give

Here we have COMPNY's new single, they're a band that are keeping the mystery alive, and we're also digging their new track "Something Had To Give", it's got a sense of an upbeat Coldplay and Bombay Bicycle Club about them! Anyway, below is the track, and enjoy!

Cathedrals - In The Dark

The San Francisco band have uploaded a brilliant anthem that can easily make you turn up your speakers, even in the middle of the night! With some great guitar hooks, deep bass and stunning vocals, it looks like things for them are going to turn good!

Travi$ Scott - Drive (The 1975 remix)

Released as a limited free download, The 1975’s reworking of Travi$ Scott’s ‘Drive’, was born from a hazy meeting after the Manchester band’s Coachella show and a mutual appreciation for each other’s music.

Interpol - The Depths

New York based Post-punk-revival band - Interpol - announced their 'comeback' album, "El Pintor", and it's the first as a trio since the departure of their bassist, and today we're VERY pleased to share with you a bonus iTunes download only track called "The Depths". If we're quite honest, I have no idea how this didn't make it onto the standard LP! Scroll down to enjoy, you know the drill!

Christian Rich - Real Love

LA-based DJ and production duo Christian Rich, AKA twin brothers Taiwo and Kehinde Hassan. Christian Rich recently contributed to the #1 Billboard albums for Drake, J Cole and Childish Gambino, as well as producing 4 tracks for Earl Sweatshirt's #1 Rap Billboard album, "Doris". "Real Love" is a beautiful track from their début EP "SS14" and we are so excited to give it to you today ... FOR FREE!

Superfood - Lily For Your Pad To Rest On

The Birmingham band have announced details of their Autumn UK Tour this week, but also details of their forthcoming début album and a new track to go with it, "Lily For Your Pad To Rest On", listen to it below!

The Naked and Famous - The Fall (The 1975 Remix)

It's been nearly a year since The 1975 have been a #1 artist, and since then the band has turned their hands to remixing songs, with their own distinctive sounds too. The airy, anthematic and laid back sound of The 1975 overflows into their remixes too. Credit where credit is due, the band is VERY consistent!

'Lily For Your Pad To Rest On', which can be heard below, will be the album opener on the quartet's début album, 'Don't Say That' which is due for release on 3rd November on Infectious Music. Superfood reveal new track "Right On Satellite"

Superfood have released a new track for fans to feast their ears upon. 'Right On Satellite' is the latest track to drop from the band.

'Right On Satellite' is a mix really of alternative British music of old and new; from The Who to The Wombats, Superfood have created a summery throwback of a song. The band have already released an EP in the form of 'MAM EP' but could this be the first sign of possible album material?

10 Of The Best Tracks We Heard This Week (w/e 25th May)

Woah, a week goes fast when you've got Arctic Monkeys at the end of it, they were great weren't they! Apart from that it has still been yet another STRONG week for new music, and we bring to you TEN of the best tracks we hear, buckle up, this one's a good'en.

Rae Morris - Cold (Feat; Fryars)

"Cold" is the latest song from Rae Morris and will be available from July 7th as a single, and Morris' début album is due for release on 22 September. The track features Fryars on it and he turns it into a proper RnB anthem with a sprinkling of acoustic piano and electronic synths layered on top.

Digitalism - Wolves

As you may know, we're a bit partial to a little bit of EDM - despite Morrissey saying it's for dumb people - to keep the balance of 'indieness' equal to all genres, remember it's ALL indie ... Anyway, so Digitalism are a band we've been loving for the past 7 years or so and their latest effort "Wolves" is by far up there with the best in their catalogue, scroll on down below and give it a listen!

Tom Vek - Broken

Tom Vek's new single "Broke" is taken from his forthcoming new album "Luck" due for release on 10th June (US) and 9th June (RoW), and you can check it out in full below! The latest track is everything Tom is about, scroll on down and check it out!

Gengahr - She's A Witch

It's not like every day we post a track that's 8 months old, but after writing up the review of their show supporting Wolf Alice in Cambridge we had their demo EP on loop. "She's A Witch" is on it and this is certainly one of the best tracks on it.

It's also going as a free download, click on the arrow below!

Los Porcos - Waterfalls

With the sun absolutely battering the UK at the moment this track has came out at the right time. Los Porcos have been a hotly tipped band for a while now, and after their début 12" single came out earlier on this year the band are certainly going to be big favourites of ours if they keep on making tracks such as this.

Ocean Jet - Weak

There's not much really to say about the state of Russian music, to be honest I'm not sure I know of any Russian acts apart from Tatu... but Ocean Jet look like they're going to be changing the face of music in the country, starting off with their new track "Weak".

Jungle - Time

Running up to the release of their long-awaited debut album - due out July 14th via XL - the secretive band from London have unveiled "Time", a funky track that is certainly going to make an awful lot of people hit BUY on iTunes.

Kasabian - Stevie

When the band went down to Jools Holland's show last week they performed three songs, like everyone else does, and the third track has just been revealed as a bond-theme sounding anthem called "Stevie".

It certainly looks like they're going to easily fulfil the Glastonbury headline slot now!

Superfood - Happy

Superfood took to the VEVO DSCVR stage at The Great Escape and performed a (surprisingly good) cover of the song that's been taking the world by storm - Pharrell Williams' "Happy". The band have been recently on tour with Wolf Alice and with them signing to Infectious earlier on this year and the team behind Peace managing them too Superfood are going to be one of the next big things for sure.

So scroll on down to check out the cover, stick this on and have a boogie!

Run Tiger Run - Teeth

A while back Run Tiger Run shared their début track "Hummingbird", and now you can check out yet another summer laden anthem from the Liverpool band. "Teeth" has certainly been released at the right time in the UK, put this track on and get outside and enjoy!

Album Review... Kitsune - New Faces

Kitsune springs upon us its latest release, ‘New Faces’, out on February 24th. As with most Kitsune compilations, it offers a real mix of different alternative music which is breaking through at this moment in time. So, rather than sum up what is a bit of a mish-mash of an album, I thought I’d give a short, ‘critical’ description of each track and allow you to make your minds up. Sounds okay? Good. Well let’s begin...

‘Mossy Grounds’ by Antimatter People

An interesting start to the album, as it plummets you into a world of day dream. There’s some smooth Jamaican vibes going through this one and the vocals, well, you could almost mistake them for being those from Alex Turner’s tongue. More accurately though, this one is for fans of Temples.

‘Sirens’ by Gallant

This is bubbling and soaring but really, lacks ambition. The soulful voice countered by the A$AP Rocky-esque grumbling vocals, and the over emphasised bass is probably too predictable by now. Not one you’re likely to remember for too long.

‘Never Love’ by Luxury

Already, three tracks in, it can be said that this album has a lot of dance and electronic influences. This track could be likened to the latest influences of Bondax or Flume. It’s more lively then the last track, which is good, and more pleasant to the ear. The piano loop that goes throughout it will get stuck in your head and send you into a trance.

‘Last Century Man’ by Solomon Grey

This is an odd one, but we like odd. The slow paced emergence of the song and hazy lyrics awake you from some sort of tropical dream like state. The delicate piano and trumpets will ease you into a song which is a delight to indulge yourself in. Finally, we’re getting somewhere with this album.

‘Shout’ by Southern

Southern are a brother and sister duo from Belfast who caught my ears some time a go, with this exact song. It’s a folky, bluesy toe tapper but with grit. Both siblings offer lyrics on a track which builds up suspension before bursting into a lively chorus with a catchy guitar hook and raucous drums.

‘Real’ by Years & Years

This is a more subtle, catchy little track by this trio. The electronic pop beats throughout are supplemented by soulful, effortless vocals that can be likened to that of Sam Smith, so there’s definitely potential with this band. It’s surprising in fact to realise that they’re still unsigned. Fans of SBTRKT will most probably enjoy this.

‘I Can Tell (By The Way You Move)’ by George Fitzgerald

George Fitzgerald is perhaps the biggest name on this album, and despite the fact it’s another song which uses the distinctive sounds of the club scene, you can tell he knows what he’s doing. He’s recently got his own shows on Radio 1 and this track demonstrates just what he can do behind the decks. If you’re a club goer you may have already heard this track, if not, you’ll be sure to hear it soon.

‘Eighty Nine’ by Panda

Unfortunately it’s not Gold Panda but just, Panda. However, this isn’t a bad choice by Kitsune. It could probably fit onto a Soundcloud remix by almost anyone but the distinct housey piano, which sounds like it’s come from 1989, bursts through its surface saves it. Again, another which could be seen in clubs.

‘Jam The Network’ by Hyetal

Twinkling and pixely, as if you’re back playing on your Nintendo 64, but how many times have we heard this sort of stuff before? It sounds like it could’ve sampled half of Breton’s latest album, but really, it’s quite lacklustre and boring.

‘Bubbles’ by Superfood

One of my bands to tip for 2014, Superfood present their best song to date. There’s flashes of them being the next Blur and comparisons could also been drawn to Weezer. They’re an indie rock band, they don’t mind screaming their nuts off, and they can play guitars.

‘Sunn II’ by Snakadaktal

This track is another favourite of mine. Whilst, in my opinion, it’s not the best song by the band, it reflects what they’re all about. They’re like a slightly more energetic version of The XX and their debut album, ‘Sleep In The Water’, released last year, is well worth a listen if you enjoy this track. There’s big prospects for these guys.

‘Overdue ‘by Clancy

You’d probably stick this next to ‘Never Love’ by Luxury, thus having similar influences of Flume etc. Its house beats are much deeper than previous songs in this album, and the ear ringing incline to the drop, prepares you to leap into a pool of deep darkness. It’s chilled to say the least.

‘Turquoise’ by Kilo Kish

Kilo Kish is a young singer from New York whose attitude could be likened to Azealia Banks but without the bullshit. She’s more subtle and relies on the experimental nature of her music to take over the listener, similar to Grimes. Worth a listen.

‘Me & Your Ghost’ by Rosie Lowe
Rosie Lowe is another young female who uses experimental sounds to create a glitchy sound which unfortunately doesn’t really work for me. There’s too much going on to really immerse yourself in the music.

Overall, Kitsune’s ‘New Faces’ presents to us some bright new talents, and some faces we’d rather forget. There’s a variety of artists on the album but at times Kitsune cling onto the current popular dance beats which serve as the main basis for the album. Maybe with a bit more guitar based bands, this could be a real treat.

Ones to keep your ears on: Antimatter People, Solomon Grey, Superfood, George Fitzgerald Snakadaktal.

Kitsune - New Faces
Out of 10: 7.8/10
