Album Review... Fenech-Soler - Rituals
Having stumbled-upon them way back in early 2010 we fell in love with their self-titled début EP, after that came the album that changed the face of Electronic music once again. But now it's changed once again, you would've thought that Fenech-Soler's best effort would be their début, considering how amazing it was when it came out - wrong - "Rituals" has once again proved to us that a band's second album can be better than the first. They're not worried about making music for their fans, rather making music they want to, it just so happens everyone loves it!
The album kicks off where the band left off, "Youth" has a real 2011 feel about it, it sounds like the bigger brother to "Demons", with catchy synth beats and lyrics you can really lose yourself in this track. "All I Know", "Last Forever" and "Magnetic" are the songs that are going to be at the forefront of the album promotion, but the album is more than just those three singles. The best songs are hidden within it's belly. "In Our Blood" just shows us what it's all about, euphoric melodies and punchy beats drive this song forwards, "Let's get lost in the dark" - Ben shouts out, a club song for the hipsters among you!
"Ritual I" and "Ritual II" are both songs that are interludes leading into "Last Forever" and "Glow" respectively, they've used their time well with these tracks breaking down the album into something you can enjoy and go back to whenever you want without ever getting tired of it. "Somebody" (see the bottom of the review) is by far my favourite track on the album. Big beats, Ben's vocals at its peak, catchy lyrics and a real summer song that I found myself dancing to a lot when I saw them at Glastonbury and Reading festival. On both occasions everyone in the tent got up and started to bounce, what's more is that this was the first time they've laid ears upon the track. Really just shows that the band can easily click with their fans from the first beat.
"Fading" and "Miayu" are next up - the album takes a slower approach for the next eight minutes or so, "Fading" is a ballard for the 21st century and "Miayu" once again shows the slower side of the band with calming chimes and chirping going on in the background, with the ethereal song giving you a lasting impression.
Before the last track of the album comes we hear the stunning "Two Cities", which is a track that goes a bit in time, some guitars are heard here with the ever present 'Fenech-Soler' sound of Ben's vocals and bass brining the track to life. "Glow" marks the end of the album which stands out in its own right, for the long-term fans of the band this is a real treat, it gives you a taste of what they were like before the limelight it them, big bass in the verses, rising vocals and delicate synths and keys caressing the drums.
By the end of the album you would've realised that Fenech-Soler are a band that have their heads in the right place. Steadily building up their fan-base from day one, generating the hype all on their own with festival appearances, a glorious début album and (most importantly) having a stunning second album that they teased us all with over the summer, this is a album the whole world can admire. "Rituals" feels like they've taken a huge step but not forgetting where they came from. This is easily an "Album of the year". I can't praise them any more, just buy the album and tell me I'm right!

Fenech-Soler remix Everything Everything's "Don't Try"
Fenech-Soler released a free EP after their début album dropped in 2010, it was called "White Versions". They were stripped back versions of songs from that album.
And now they're dabbling with other artists tracks, here the band have re-worked Everything Everything's track "Don't Try" and has given it a 'White Version' flavour to it, you can listen to it below!

Ones to watch at Reading Festival 2013 - Top 10
The same as last year, but all rammed into one gorgeous post! Here we choose the best 10 bands to watch at this years festival (same for Leeds obviously).
1 - As Elephants Are
They've got a lot of hype around them on the back of their last single "Lucifer" and "Youth Blood". with a new single coming up that's surely going to be played on the Radio all over the UK this is going to be a prime place to check out one of the hottest bands around!
Where? BBC Introducing Stage
When? Sunday
2 - Casablanca
We're so in love with this band we've even booked them for a show back in January! While most bands hide behind a façade Casablanca are one of those bands that play great music and are awesome guys to be around. If you imagine Phoenix crossed with early Bloc Party and the upbeat Bombay Bicycle Club songs then you (in a nut-shell) have Casablanca. You can download their latest track "We Could Forever" below!
Where? BBC Introducing Stage
When? Saturday
3 - Saint Raymond
We've mentioned him here before, and Callum Burrows band shall be gracing the stage this year at Reading. Quite an achievement for him considering how young he is!After being touted as the next Jake Bugg, touring with Gabrielle Aplin and Lewis Watson and performing at such festivals as The Great Escape he is certainly a talent to keep an eye on! Check out his track "Everything SHe Wants" below.
Where? BBC Introducing Stage
When? Saturday
4 - Fenech-Soler
We've been banging on about Fenech-Soler since day one of this blog/website, and after seeing them five or so times we still enjoy their sound. What's more is that they'll be showcasing new material from their forthcoming album "Rituals". With VERY favourable reviews coming in regarding their latest single "Magnetic". They're unafraid to embrace their pop side, the band marry big bouncy beats, chanting vocals, epic guitars and Hoover-style synth rushes that make you feel like you're on a rollercoaster.
Where? BBC Radio 1 Dance Stage
When? Friday
5 - Stay Positive
We've dubbed them the new Crystal Castles, but that may be a bit unfair as Stay Positive have much more going for them. The London producer is a classicaly trained violinist but that doesn't hold him back from making massive dance tunes that'll wake you up from the dead! The track below is what we love about them the most, get ready for a messy start to your day!
Where? BBC Radio 1 Dance Stage
When? Sunday
6 - Is Tropical
After they've revealed their masks the band have (if anything) become a whole lot better! This point is made with their track "Dancing Anymore". After the massive hype around their first album and the worldwide success of it, they're now going to be playing tunes off their 2nd LP. After being booked to play in Mongolia this appearance might be a bit too straight forward for them! But one thing is for sure, it's going to be fun to see the trio again!
Where? BBC Radio 1 Dance Stage
When? Friday
7 - Jaws
Jaws, a band I've been into since the demo CD, and I'm not saying that, I actually do have it! They've been rising with the B-Town scene, but recently they've been lagging behind. But this performance will push them back into the spotlight, with their "Milkshake" EP already out and their single "Gold" out as well, now is the time to jump on the band-wagon, check out "Gold" below to see why we've been following them for so long! Summer loving!
Where? BBC Introducing Stage
When? Friday
8 - Post War Years
After seeing them support White Lies and Wild Beasts back in 2010 we've been keeping a close eye on the Leamington-Spa band. And when "All Eyes" dropped last year we knew that they were going to strike gold with their album.
Where? BBC Radio 1 Dance Stage
When? Saturday
9 - Childhood
A band that has suddenly appeared on our radar a few months ago, the London band have caught the eyes of everyone in the music industry. They comprise of four fresh-faced young lads who master the art of shoegaze summer rock. Their live show is full of melodies and woozy innocence akin to The Stone Roses but with less swagger. Again like Wolf Alice, being advertised as one of the hottest guitar bands around and with little to give on the internet, they have a lot to give at their live shows and it’s not to be missed.
Where? NME/BBC Radio 1 Stage / AND / BBC Introducing Stage
When? Saturday
10 - Peace
The B-Town scallywags finally hit up Reading, this is going to be one of the hottest sets of the weekend. Do be sure to check them out as they'll no doubt be playing their Binary Finary cover "1998".

Listen to a new Fenech-Soler track 'All I Know'
The band have finally released a track from their second album, all I know is a typical Fenech-Soler track, it's fast, heavily laden with synths and echoes of guitar in the background. It's great to see the band back on form!

Daily Download... Fenech-Soler - Fashion
This was when the band were playing some Techno inspired club beats. All of the songs older than 2008 were recorded in the Duffy house-hold with their friend, the same friend who they took the name of their band from. Listen to my personal favourite “Black Keys” below. This is a great way to get pumped up for their second album!

Gig Review... Fenech-Soler @ The Cresset, Peterborough, 20th September 2011
It isn't a well known fact that Fenech-Soler hail from the 2nd city of Cambridgeshire... But they do! Their home-coming show was packed, with friends, fans, and even the next door neighbour (I kid you not) popping along to see the band take to the stage! They opened with the very electronicly enhanced 'Battlefields', with the oohs and ahhs lasting for what seemed like a life-time Ben suddenly popped like a balloon, dancing everywhere and singing his heart out! The punchy, deep and groovy synths proved to be a big hit with the crowd, certainly a great way to start the night! Next on the set-list was 'LA Love' which was initially a B-Side to 'Lies', this was a great track to sing along to, and even the band were enjoying themselves!
After the cracking openers it was the turn of one of their singles, 'Demons'.

'Golden Sun' and 'Stop And Stare' were the last two songs of the night, or were they? The band have been 're-learning' an old track... any guesses? it was 'Airbrushed', the song featured as a B-Side on 'The Cult Of Romance' 12" (which I have) and also on their very first EP! This was a real treat, especially to me as I love their older stuff as much as their album songs.
After the show finished I hung around at the merchandise stand to buy a bag and a jumper... who did I run into... the whole band! I chatted to Ben and Daniel, who are both really kind gentlemen and took time to speak to me, I will be putting up excerpts of the chat I had with Ben alongside an interview I am hopefully going to have with him soon. This was indeed one of the best gigs I have ever seen, be sure to check them out!

After the cracking openers it was the turn of one of their singles, 'Demons'.
"Hello old friend, the night is dark and I feel cold,This was one of my highlights of the night as it proved to be one of the biggest songs, judging by the crowds reaction it was! A slower track was thrown into the mix after that stunning ear pleasing track. Ben turned towards his piano and I thought, oh 'Stone Bridge' is next, well not yet, 'Lies' was to come, but not before 'The Great Unknown' and 'Contender' came into the mix. With the latter having cowbells thrown into the mix, which I go crazy for (I don't know why, but I do!).
The sun is setting and I need to get out before it starts"
