[ALBUM REVIEW] The Maccabees - Marks To Prove It

When we first heard new music from The Maccabees it was the title track of the album, and I was very excited for the new album right off the first listen! It was a tough album to conceive, with Orlando confessing that they came close to breaking point, but thanks to Jamie T the band pulled together and produced a cracking album that they can be more than happy about.

Starting with the album's title track "Marks To Prove It" you're thrown into familiar territory with a rush of guitars and epic choruses. The album takes a turn next with "Kamakura", with a dark approach and loose guitars flowing through it, it also has a very atmospheric edge to it, this is a track that wouldn't sound out of place on their last LP. "Ribbon Road" features a driving drum-line and some delicate piano keys, Orlando's vocals here are at the best on the album, with him swooning and singing a lullaby love song in your ears.

Next up is the very quiet and slow "Spit It Out", a track that for the die hard Maccabees fans might not be comfortable with before evolving into a piano lead affair. The next two songs are "Silence" and "River Song". The former is a track I hold in high regard with a change of lead vocals from Orlando to guitarist Hugo, which just shows that the band can now not only rely on Orlando for vocals. The change in singer here is a stroke of genius, the deeper tone of Hugo suits this song a lot more than if Orlando sang it.

"Slow Sun" is yet another example of the band experimenting a little bit, with horns, a lot more piano involved and some soothing female vocals added in for good measure. As I've said before, this track just oozes atmospheric-pop border-lining on ambient-pop. With "Something Like Happiness" following is a change back to The Maccabees' sound that you're all familiar with.

The album leaves you with three stunning parting songs "WW1 Portraits", "Pioneering Systems" and the closing track "Dawn Chorus". "WW1 Portraits" sounds like a romantic song written for the people with a dark side, a slow start the the track moves over to some stunning guitar hooks and riffs, the fact that Orlando is back to his 'shouting' style of singing suggests that the band were after a song to play live here, with a epic ending to the track it will linger with you for a while! "Pioneering Systems" proves to us all that when Orlando said it'll be more stripped back and less guitars he wasn't lying, this is mainly vocals and piano here, and it sounds like something written in the mid-80's by an Americana singer on acid. As the album closes on "Dawn Chorus" you feel like this is a track to reflect the album on, it's a well rounded number that suits the accolade of the album's closer.

"Marks To Prove It" was well worth the band's near break-up the way I see it, it's a lot more stripped back than what I was personally expecting but none-the-less they've made this album without comprise and it's a solid effort from the Brighton band.

Public Service Broadcasting remix "Marks To Prove It" by The Maccabees

The Maccabees' comeback single - "Marks To Prove It" - has been remixed by the retro loving, propaganda inspired band Public Service Broadcasting. And much like the band's work on their first album it has a driving bassline and a fast drum sequence with some spaced out vocals and synths. Now this is how to put your own spin on a track, love it!

The Maccabees announce their 4th album - "Marks To Prove It"

Written by The Maccabees, the bands' new album "Marks To Prove It" features eleven brand new tracks that veer from the anthemic "Spit It Out", to the majestic next single "Something Like Happiness", the mournful lilt of "Kamakura" and the raw, explosive joy of the title track, first single "Marks To Prove It".

Watch the perform a cover of Major Lazer's "Lean On" here.

Recorded at their own Elephant Studios, the album encapsulates the urban feel of their local neighbourhood. The artwork, a striking photograph of the Faraday Memorial on Elephant & Castle roundabout taken by David Busfield (see below), provides the perfect visual extension of the album’s intended association with the area in which it was made.

Felix White - "It became about the night time, the inner city stripped-back and about the band dynamic again"

Orlando Weeks - "One of the things we were clear about for the album, was not having too many voices, too many characteristics, so that you could get to know the sounds, the instruments. And then, at the end, that meant we could reintroduce those characters, not in a way that was aping what had gone before but as a familiar force."

"Marks To Prove It" Tracklisting:
1. Marks To Prove It
2. Kamakura
3. Ribbon Road
4. Spit It Out
5. Silence
6. River Song
7. Slow Sun
8. Something Like Happiness
9. WW1 Portraits
10. Pioneering Systems
11. Dawn Chorus

Through One Ear and Out the Other; A Musical Shift From 2014 to 2015

Music is a constant, merely blurred by the boundaries of our calendar. 2015 will provide nothing different on the music scene as old rockers return and new names bubble to the surface, there should be something to savour for music fans this year. Here's some personal tips and moments to look forward to in 2015.

1. Return of the Maccs
On New Years eve Orlando Weeks and co gave us news of a new album and plenty more live shows hitting us in 2015. What the details are exactly we don't know yet but if it's anything like their last album, 'Given To The Wild', then their next instalment could be the record of the year.

2. The Rock 'n' Roll Revival Hits Wembley
In June Foo Fighters will take to Wembley Stadium to play some of their biggest shows to date but what's even more tasty is their support. It comes in the shape of hard-hitting duo Royal Blood who could soon rival Dave Grohl for a headline slot. 2014 was the definitive year for the pair but 2015 ought to firmly establish them as saviours of thick riffs and drums, a lot of drums.

3. Peace is the word
B-Town quartet Peace will bring some more shimmery vibes to your ear waves early on into the year with their second album, 'Happy People', dropping in February. Having spoken to the man behind the mic it seems that it won't end there though as a sea of tour dates and plans for a third album are very much in motion.

4. A Band Called Palace
With the return of the Maccabees already being noted, a band who will be hot on their heels this year is London outfit, 'Palace'. Their alternative tinting of archaic blues brought them a support slot on Jamie T's tour and 2015 will undoubtedly see them rise from their debut EP platform.

5. King Raury
If Outkast's comeback was too 2002 for you then welcome to Raury. The teenager from Atlanta is making rifts across seas and has impressed the likes of BBC to feature him on their Sounds of 2015 list. Over the past year he's released some interesting projects touching upon Andre 3000 and Childish Gambino influences which will carry him confidently through 2015.

6. Male music
Raury's not the only young man who you'll be hearing in 2015. Bipolar Sunshine will be delivering upbeat pop rhythms whereas the more gentle whirrs of Brits critics choice, James Bay, will be prominent and for the more rugged edge, Only Real will be bringing the skatty upbeat guitar playing back. Expect these three to be very much in and around some of the best things you hear this year.

7. Festivals
Hardly a surprise this but yes the dawn of 2015 means we move even closer to festival season. Despite the slightly under-par line up, Glastonbury was a stonker last year so if Eavis manages to book the bigger acts this year, it could be one of the best yet. Elsewhere Reading and Leeds have brought in Metallica, making their Glastonbury performance last year look not so special after all. Smaller festivals to look out for include Bestival - the biggest party of the year, and metropolitan festivals, Live At Leeds and Tramlines.

8. The Brits Bullshit
It appears the only good thing going for the Brits this year is that James Corden has been put out of his misery, his script tossed to one side as Ant and Dec take over the presenting duties. Don't expect any tongue in cheek public speech by Alex Turner this year though. Instead sit back and enjoy a festoon of faces who you'll have been tired of seeing since last February - Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift will all give 'big performances' on the show - all for the viewing figures eh.
