[LISTEN] Skogsrå - Out Of Time

SKOGSRÅ is the Swedish equivilant of Major Lazer, loads of tunes - all bangers! His latest track is "Out of Time", which features some funky as guitar lines that Nile Rodgers himself would be proud of. It's a funky, upbeat, dancey, indie-pop gem and is certainly one to pop on for a Friday night boogie down the discotheque.

[LISTEN] - Perfect Lines - Northeast Party House

Northeast Party House are a really interesting band, who like to combine their dance-y music with more rock and pop based sounds. Their music is a lot of fun to listen to whether you prefer the dance side or the pop side, but new single Perfect Lines lies on the rock side more than anything.

Garage rock inspired riffs layered with the odd synth which NPH are known for make for an exhilarating listen. When combined with the powerful lead vocals from singer Zac Hamilton-Reeves and the backing vocals that sound like a Gorillaz song, it becomes a fantastic rock song, even if it never truly feels like a rock song.

It's a superb blend of indie-rock and NPH's dance roots that makes for a stunning indie-rock tune. The instrumental part of the song that starts at about 2:30, and is only punctuated by the occasional dreamy vocal, is so punchy and honest, but it still makes you want to dance along with it. Such is the beauty of the band.

Northeast Party House are an Australian band, but are coming to the UK for a few London shows this October, so if you're around London, get down and see them. Their live shows are legendary for their energy and atmosphere.

Introducing... Real Lies

Debut single, 'World Peace' by London trio Real Lies could not sum up a bands sound more accurately. Straight from the kick off, the border of 80s and 90s pop synth is crossed to create a melody almost too close for comfort to New Order; it's spot on.

Sounding just like the Italia '90 hit, 'World In Motion', Real Lies are instant controllers of their own destiny, slipping in clips of 90s football on a box TV and memorabilia strung across the walls in the video for the dance hit. It's almost a surprise that John Barnes didn't crop up with an irrelevant rap half way through. 

B-side, 'Deeper', is a throwback to Pet Shop Boys as Neil Tennant's mundane vocals echo are near enough present in every nook of the track. The effervescing synth still rings strong into latest EP, 'North Circular', which comprises more toned down and troubling vocals similar to The Streets. 'Dab Housing' on the other hand is dreamy and includes smooth tropical groove without getting too carried away. The track, perfectly suited for those dark and misty club nights is as intriguing as the band members, who choose to refer to themselves by their initials, KK, TW and PK. Don't expect them to remain strangers though, as the indie-dance pioneers bring it back to 2015.

Interview with... Jon McClure of Reverend and The Makers

Just over a couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to be exclusively sent a watermarked copy of the brand new Reverend and The Makers album, 'Thirty Two' - due out February 24th. Now, after one fantastic 9/10 review later, courtesy of Its All Indie - I had the privilege of talking to Sheffield front-man Jon McClure for a no-holds-barred, exclusive interview.

Hello Jon, thank you for taking the time to do this interview. Right, first of all, your new album is scheduled for release later this month. How long have you been working on this album and overall how many songs were written before you decided on the final 11 song track listing? 

Jon - About a year I reckon. We had about 20 songs so it's slimmed down to 11 - but it's like all killer no filler you know what I mean? haha 

The new album is entitled 'Thirty Two' – was there any particular reason for calling it that? Is it because you have recently turned 32 – just in time for the release of the album? 

Jon - I think it's a bit of a continuation of the last album really. We've hit a point where we have this cult following and I’m at ease being 32. I've nothing to prove so it's almost back to our debut where we just write tunes for the tunes sake. It's liberating and I think it's (Thirty Two) our best work. We've tried hard to combine the two things that make Sheffield ace which is the electro thing from The Cabs, Heaven 17 and The Human League, combined with the lyrical thing which people like Jarvis are so good at. 

You initially made the announcement of a new album via your Twitter page – and the social network site seems to be a predominant part of your band now with even your third album having being called @Reverend_Makers, your Twitter username. So how important is Twitter do you think in regards to being able to connect with fans on a more personal level? 

Jon - Well you have two distinct choices as a musician. A - Make cheesy fucking music to fit in with Little Mix and 1D and get on the radio or B - make music on your own terms and rely on social media and word of mouth to do the rest - I know where I'm at.  

Do you think it’s wrong then when bands effectively employ someone else to run their social networking sites for them as it means they aren’t gaining the chance to connect with their fans as much as they could? 

Jon - Well there’s a couple of Indie boys who employ people to write their music so it's no great leap to get someone to do your Twitter. It's an industry of fakers. It's a shame fans don't read the credits more. 

On the topic of involving fans, by using pledge music fans will be able to somewhat feel like they have had a part to play in the process of this new album, and you are also giving some people the chance to have you perform personally in their house - do you think it’s important to do things like this for fans and do you think more bands should be doing similar things to break down the barriers between fan and band?

Jon - Well it's about communication of the spirit of the music. I write songs about real life and it's my way of standing with the fans and saying, "I'm one of you". It's peoples music. I think, and I hope that people see the disconnection between the bullshit in the mainstream and what people actually want.

In regards to the house gigs, the response has been amazing. I sort of nicked the idea from my pal Carl Barat though. Him and Peter used to do similar things didn't they? The main thing though is it's such a laugh. Like you make an album then tour it then go to festivals and it becomes formulaic. This is my way of getting back to the soul of the music. It's been class though. I've had a wedding proposal, a dog named after me, a car crash and a riot van turn up all in one week so far!

Out of all the house gigs you have played so far – which one has been the best and why? 

Jon - Always the last one you play. That's why I keep doing it. It's like a junkie. That adrenaline you get from your latest gig is addictive man!

I have already had the privilege of listening to the new album but for your fans that of course will have to wait a little longer than I have to get their hands on it, can you describe to them what they can expect from your fourth LP?  

Jon - Just bangers - the type you're not supposed to be able to write by the fourth album, but I think we are better now than 10 years ago so yeah strap in for a load of bangers, with a couple of classy ballads chucked in just because. 

It's been around six years now since your debut album 'The State of Things' was released and although all three of the albums you have released have rightfully achieved a place in the Top 20, it's your debut that appears to remain your highest charting - does the success of a previous album ever have an effect in regards to how you look to approach its follow up? Or do you treat every album as if it's your first and not dwell on the success of the album that came before?
 

Jon - To be honest the first did the best because they hammered it on the radio. Since then the radio has undergone a sea change where they've started playing non-stop bollocks like Little Mix and Calvin Harris to compete with the commercial stations so the fact we still do alright and get in the charts is testament to our music and to the fans I think who know where the real music is at. 

You also recently announced the dates for the UK tour that will be in support of the new album. Although you will be playing all over the country, is it the Sheffield date you always most look forward to when first kicking off a tour? 

Jon - God no. The actual gig in Sheffield is always amazing but I've got that many aunties and cousins and what not it's like a wedding. Going round kissing folks and saying hello to everyone is a right old stress haha. Liverpool, Manchester or London are all massive gigs but with less relatives so I can be a bit naughtier I reckon haha.  

Are you going to be playing any festivals this year in light of the new album and if so which ones can you currently confirm? 

Jon - Can't confirm any yet but yeah there will be loads. We have become a bit of a 'festival' band in the last few years so we will be bringing the party - no doubt.

You were allegedly offered up to £150,000 to make an album ‘like Arctic Monkeys’ back in 2005 by some major labels – do you think that is a clear example of what is slowly becoming wrong with the music industry? The fact that major labels seem to be on a constant mission to change and mould an artist into what they perceive to be something they can make money out of?

Jon - They just want carbon copies. So for instance I've known Ed Sheeran for years. He was plugging away at an industry which wouldn't listen. Then he does well, then we get ten Ed Sheeran clones. Music is about money and marketing nowadays and the artists are often a secondary factor. I refuse to participate in any of that bollocks.

Following that, you went onto sign a record deal in 2006 I believe with Wall Of Sound - but do you think it’s harder now for a new band to break into the industry given the fact that shows like Radio 1 seem to mainly prioritise ‘pop/dance acts’ who are already somewhat guaranteed chart success due to that huge label backing? 

Jon - Exactly. I agree with that. Fuck it though. Chart your own path. I still believe in word of mouth, especially through things like Twitter.  

In regards to the new bands who actually have seemed to have made some impact over the last year, such as Peace, Palma Violets and Haim etc. – what do you think of them? And what other under the radar bands do you think we should all look out for? 

Jon - There's a lot of posh kids isn't there? Like they can afford to do fuck all apart from go round in a van being in a band. There's no pressure to pay the gas bill is there. There seems to be a dearth of peoples music to my mind but yeah there are loads of amazing bands. Liberty Ship from Sheffield are the best I've heard in years.

The lyrical content in your songs has always seem to focus around real life situations that are more than relatable to an audience – do you think this is vital then in regards to once again connecting with your audience successfully? 

Jon - Well I think bands turn shit when they stop writing about subjects their audience comprehend. To that end it's vital to keep a strong connection with what fires your lyrics. So I stay in Sheffield. I hang out with my brother who runs a pub and my cousin who works on the bins. It's the little stories isn't it? I doubt it's the same if you're on a fucking yacht somewhere getting a tan!

Do you think bands that attempt to write lyrics that are overly metaphorical and abstract to the point where you can’t make sense of them is a bad move? 

Jon - Depends who you are. But yeah sounds like utter bollocks to me. Of course the journalists are almost 100% from private school backgrounds now. To work at a paper you must do an unpaid internship. How many folk do you know can live in London for a month, unpaid? So inevitably the press is staffed by the privileged. What they know of the things I sing of is minimal isn't it? So it's natural they would hate my music.

What is married life like on the road? Are there ever any major disagreements? Or is being able to share the same live on stage experiences and emotions every night a great feeling to be able to do together?

Jon - When we were getting together it was very dramatic. Rev-enders we used to call it. It's fucking beautiful now though. I love Laura to bits and without her and Ed there would be no band 'cause I have been a right wanker at times haha.

You recently played a ‘This Feeling’ night on NYE, alongside Carl Barat and The Rifles – what was the overall night like? The best way to bring in the New Year? And did you manage to catch the opening band The Mono-Polys? If so, do you think they are up to the challenge that is the music industry? 

Jon - I did they were great. The singer was a right character. NYE was ace. Me and Carl always end up in a tangle. I got punched about 5am and then the geezer ran off lol. The Rifles are great though. They are so popular and deserve far more coverage then they get. But again what they do isn't deemed cool by the hairdressers like Grimshaw haha 

You've played with Andy Nicholson and Drew McConnell in Mongrel, been in a band previous to Reverend and the Makers with Alex turner and Matt Helders and even had Turner contribute guitar and vocals on some of your songs before – for the fans who once again don’t know, can we expect any of these familiar names to pop up again on the new record? If not, is there any collaborations at all on the new record? 

Jon - A couple yes. But I don't wanna open your Xmas presents for ya, so you'll have to wait and see haha.

Single Review... Safari - Doubt / Are We Ready

Having been in our top ten artists for 2012 we couldn't wait to share with you their latest single, it's a double A-Side single, their latest song 'Doubt' along with a track we already love, 'Are We Ready'. The single is being released via Sons of Stereo Recordings on February 27th.

Doubt:
It opens with vocals and a riff, the vocals echoing "It's all good", and it seems to be! With the chorus impending the verse drops and you get thrown into a whirlwind of Tropical sounds, stunning guitar riffs and synths. The drum pace is fast and quick and gives that added layer of excitement. Safari are known to us for not putting a foot wrong, and they haven't put one wrong yet, this is stunning!!!

Are We Ready:
Trumpets open the song with high pitched vocals accompanying it, then bass hit. The tension is broken when the drums and guitar drop. Great bass riffs and brilliant synth samples are used throughout the song. Safari have really crafted a song to be a big hit in the future, what is for sure is it suits the summer well! I wonder if it is them that has supplied this Indian summer we have been having as of late, hmm. What is for certain is this track is a killer, watch out for more from them in the coming months! They've even re-done 'Reason' which is also available on their soundcloud page, just click 'this is SAFARI' below the stream.

Due out for official release on 20th February 2012 via US label All Things Go, 'Sol' is the first offering from Newcastle based Anglo-Italian four piece M A U S I. Born in Milan, siblings Daisy & Thomas moved to the UK in 2008 where they met and moved in with Englishmen Ben & Benji at
University in the North East.



Formed in 2010, the band cite French collectives Pony Pony Run Run, Phoenix and Breakbot as their biggest influences, as well as an unashamed love for pop favourites Uffie and Penguin Prison. M A U S I create blissful up-beat pop, that harnesses a carefree Rivieran edge and driving disco feel; that is no more present than in single 'Sol'.

Sounds of 2012 - #9 - Fixers

After getting the free download of their début track 'Amsterdam' around March time of this year I've been really intrigued by this band. Their psychedelic and experimental take on Tropical-Indie guitar based music is a niche that had not been explored until this funky Oxford based band came into being.



So far this year they've released two 7" singles and two 10" EPs, with lots of music already out there to listen to you'd be hard pressed not to find some of their tracks catchy. The latest offering is one of their oldest tracks 'Majesties Ranch' which has been re-reocrded for the latest EP, and it sounds amazing! And even their older music is amazing, they re-released their old 3 track EP that was sold at their gigs in 2010 free, and it's available just at the bottom of the post. With a début album coming at last in 2012, they hype is already starting to gain some momentum, especially since the last EP has got so many rave reviews. Keep a close eye on this band, we'll be following them very closely in the coming year!

Sounds of 2012 - #10 - Safari

We've heavily featured this band since we first heard them in July, and for good reasons too! I suspect a highlight of their year would be playing 'Rhythms Of The World' Festival in Hitchin in their home county. I heard about the masses of young fans ramming the small stage and people bouncing along to the grooves!



They've had a wonderful year and with the début album just round the corner the band released a double A-Side single 'Are We Ready/Doubt' on their website just a few days ago. They only released 'Doubt' on YouTube a few weeks ago, but this is what we though of 'Are We Ready' ... Trumpets open the song with high pitched vocals accompanying it, then bass hit. Safari have really crafted a song to be a big hit in the future, what is for sure is it suits the summer well! Safari - So I See

Gig Review... Friendly Fires @ 02 Brixton Academy, London, 25th November 2011

This has been an incredible year for the St. Albans trio. 'Pala' is one of the top albums of the year and the band have had sell out shows across most of their UK tour. I have been lucky enough to catch the boys 3 times this year. Some call me obsessed but they have been 3 of my favourite moments of 2011. The combination of the atmosphere in the crowd, the eye candy, the hypnotic bright lights and fantastically engineered Indie-Pop music. Front man Ed has a unique presence on stage and you couldn’t miss the magnetizing shapes he pulls from a mile away.

Due to popular demand Friendly Fires occupied Brixton Academy for 3 whole nights. I bagged tickets for the first announced gig on Friday 25thNovember. Brixton is the largest venue I have experienced Friendly Fires, and even with only 2 albums under their stylish belts the guys and their accompanying brass band had no problem igniting up the Academy by performing banger after banger.

Opening the show with 'Lovesick', you would never have thought that just over a week before Brixton Friendly Fires had to cancel a string of shows due to Ed's health. The front man sent it, belting out the chorus at once with moves to match. Keeping with the first album, the next track was my personal Friendly Fires fave 'Jump In The Pool'. Jack's amazing drum work really stood out for me in this rendition. Then a conga of jewelled ladies donning tails of feathers evocative of the Pala parrot came out for a Samba remix to the end of the song.

Friendly Fires introduced Brixton to the latest album 'Pala' with the big songs 'Running Away' and 'Blue Cassette'. I have to give props to Diz-Co Lighting Design for the incredible visuals for the shows. The suited disco light set for the funky 'True Love' put an edge to the song that made me fall in love with it all over again.

The guys then played between the two albums, both being equally received by the audience with shaking hips, arms in the air and mass sing-alongs, or was that just me? For the infectious 'On board' Jack comes away from drums for some cowbell banging while the Balearic 'Chimes' gives you a taste of Ed's vocal range. It's no surprise that 'Skeleton boy' always gets a huge reaction from the crowd, with its electro-funk and poppy lyrics. Then Energy came down for 'Show me Lights', 'In the Hospital' and 'Pala', then came straight back in our faces for the first release off Pala, 'Live Those Days Tonight'.

One of my most memorable moments from the gig was during the enchanting 'Hurting', where Ed stood on a disco lit box with smoke blasting up from it, showing off his signature moves to the max, all very Marilyn Monroe-esque. Friendly Fires ended the main set with the gorgeous 'Paris' and 'Pull me back to Earth'.

For the encore the guys quickly returned blasting out ‘woooop woooop woooop durrrr-um ping’ through the Academy. Which some may recognise as the intro to Hawaiian Air. If you followed Friendly Fires throughout the festival season, live or on the telly box, you were probably expecting a string of beautiful Hawaiian costumed ladies to appear on stage. And right so, because that is exactly what we got at Brixton too. Then the cowbells came back out for 'Kiss of Life' to draw a close on the monumental night.

Gig Review... Friendly Fires @ The Corn Exchange, Cambridge, 21st November 2011

Friendly Fires cancelled some of their tour dates due to singer Ed having laryngitis, there was a big worry from local fans if they would play or not. Thankfully they would never let SPC down - SPC being the live promoters who put them on way back even before Friendly Fires had an EP out! I got to the venue at around 8:15pm and didn't realise I missed the first support act, still, I was there to see Friendly Fires so it wasn't a problem.

One thing I do love about seeing them perform is Ed's crazy hip dancing that could easily rival Beyonce! The lights on the stage were fantastic with the Pala Parrot flying around on the neon displays during 'Hawaiian Air' and 'Pala'. The crowd went mental for nearly every song, especially 'Jump In The Pool', 'Live Those Days Tonight' 'On Board' and 'Lovesick'! This was the second time I've seen them and the first in their 'home territory' of the Western part of East Anglia. You would never of assumed that Ed even had an illness with that level of energy and tight skills from the other members. Please please please do see them, you won't regret it!

Gig Review... Trophy Wife @ The Nest, London, 12th November 2011

After we were blew away by their début single, astonished by the follow up and then the ear-gasm that was their EP, I just had to see this band again! We previously caught them at Underground Festival in Gloucester, but due to missing most of their set I didn't think it worth while writing a review up. Still, here I am, with a review on their performance from The Nest in Dalston (London).



They opened their set with 'Wolf', this track was produced by Yannis from Foals and you can clearly see the influence he has had even when the track is being played live, a slow jam starting off the crowd with huge synths, dark vocals and bass laden samples. The crowd were now up for it, and when they played the first few notes of 'Bruxism' the place erupted! One of their oldest songs then followed - 'Take This Night' - which is still as great as it ever has been! Another track of the highly acclaimed EP was 'Sleepwalks' which with it's upbeat rhythms was pleasantly revived by the crowd, at this time it ticked midnight, but hey, Trophy Wife up close and live at that time of day is amazing, right! Two new track were played back to back, they were 'Discovery' and 'Heavy Touch', I can't remember much, but they must be for the impending album or as a new single? Still, I loved them none the less. 'Microlite' and 'Canopy Shade' finished off the set, I must say, I was blown away by their skill on stage, commanding vocals and the hot and sweaty conditions, great show guys, see you soon!

Safari - the Hertfordshire based band - released their video for 'Doubt' a few days ago. The single is out December 1st and is directed by the bands very own Jonny Flynn (Keys). They will release it as a free download on their website along with 'Are We Ready'

News: Is Tropical video and live dates

Is Tropical are set to release a new single on KITSUNÉ /CO-OP on the 31st of October 2011, the song is called 'Lies', and it's already got us in a daze! We will have a review up of that song very soon! 'Lies' is the follow up to the recent 'The Greeks' single with its now legendary video and is the third single to be lifted from the band's début album 'Native to', which was released in June this year.



The video is directed by Jonathan Leder, the creative director of 'Jacques' Magazine which is America’s only new luxury erotic magazine.Formed in 2009, the IS TROPICAL line up of Gary Barber (Vocals / Guitar / keys), Simon Milner (Vocals / Guitars / Keys) and Dominic Apa (Drums) have developed a worldwide reputation for their stunning live shows.

Taking to the stage in their trademark masks, and cloaked by self-made video projections, they improvise constantly changing soundscapes, effortlessly swooping from raw pop anthems to lo-fi dance songs with fantastic results.

LIES (Leopard Of Honour RMX) by ISTROPICAL

Track of the week... I Heart Sharks - Neuzeit

Unlike many other bands in their genre, I Heart Sharks insist on playing everything live, and are celebrated for spearheading a new Indie music scene in Berlin and Germany. We have previously featured them on the blog and this time round they have a single and an album about to be released. A song that'll be on both is called 'Neuzeit'.



They've certainly come a long way since I heard their demos around a year ago. They have grown up with the song boasting some German lyrics as well as English - they are a Anglo-German band after all. The guitar rush in the middle of the chorus is simply amazing as the band embrace their influences and create a track that is set for the dance-floors. They've also recently supporting Friendly Fires in Germany, if I were them I'd be trembling, why? Because 'Neuzeit' is one nugget of Electro-Indie perfection.

Single Review... Starlings - Dark Arts

Riding high on the blog love from their first two singles, Starlings are back with yet another infectious Electronic gem! Building their sound around a distinctive Balearic sound they have combined Techno, Indie and Electronic elements to give one more look into the workings of the band.



Dark Arts:
Bass and Synths open the track with an echoing layer of vocals, this gives you the chills from the off. You would be expected to think this is a slower track than any of their previous work. Just wait, the drop is coming! Just after the bridge the chorus hits you like a punch to the face. It's amazing, the amount of layers they have put into this track gives your ears a right old treat as there is so much to take in, one part of the track I do admire, that's for sure!

Track of the week... Safari - Are We Ready

Safari have become one of our favourites here on the blog, I even recently went down to London to buy their 7" début single 'Quicksand'. When I got back home I saw a message from Jonny Flynn (Keys) sent me a link to a brand new Safari song, and boy is it good!



Trumpets open the song with high pitched vocals accompanying it, then bass hit. The tension is broken when the drums and guitar drop. Great bass riffs and brilliant synth samples are used throughout the song. Safari have really crafted a song to be a big hit in the future, what is for sure is it suits the summer well! I wonder if it is them that has supplied this Indian summer we have been having as of late, hmm. What is for certain is this track is a killer, watch out for more from them in the coming months! Hidden Gems... Crystal Fighters - Fiesta

This is a rare B-Side that featured on the 'Plage' 7" single that was released at the start of the European summer, just in time for the European festival season. An online version of the song only surfaced towards the end of the summer, so that's the reason why it's so late up.!



This is a cover and partial translated version of 'Golpes Bajos' 1984 hit 'Fiesta De Los Maniquies'. They have certainly done the original justice with a re-vamp of the song, translated it for the English speaking market. They even play this song live, which is a nice treat to hear them actually sing in Spanish, rather than pretending to be Spanish - with tom-foolery such as their accents, they are from Hackey for crying out loud! - but other than that, it's a nice diversion away from their own material, may the Spanish lyrics continue!
