Gig Review... Cody Chesnutt @ The Ruby Lounge, Manchester, 21st March 2013

Cody Chesnutt doesn’t do things by halves. He announced his triumphant return back to the game after a ten-year absence in triumphant style with a mesmerising performance on Jools Holland, and of course he was wearing his trademark military helmet. Why you may ask? Because he is ‘trying to keep the soul alive’ that’s why!

Well… a stuffy basement in Manchester might not seem like the most appropriate place to keep the ‘soul alive’, but that did not deter the charismatic Cody Chesnutt. Entering onstage in a rather triumphant fashion with his arms aloft, he instantly started writhing around the cramped stage firing award-winning smiles and shaking hands of unsuspecting members of the crowd. Then there’s the music, his latest album ‘Landing on a Hundred’ is a smooth and sultry blend of modern day soul packed full of slinky lyrical flows and irresistible chunks of funk.

“I used to smoke crack back in the day. I used to dog the nice ladies, used to swindle friends, but now I’m teaching kids in Sunday school and I’m not turning back,” Cody croons in ‘Everybody’s Brother’. It’s clear to see that these lyrics are plucked straight from the heart and would certainly tug on the heartstrings of most. But not this Manchester crowd, oh no. They responded with some of the most alternative dance moves around. For instance, one brave fellow took it upon himself to climb on the speakers and move like a slithering snake, whilst others were moving in a way that could really only be described as faulty pogo sticks, it was quite a spectacle.

“If your moving forward in your life, then this is for you” announced a grinning Cody before leaping into an electrifying three-song encore. One thing is for certain, with performances like this, Cody Chesnutt is definitely moving onwards and upwards.
